I need your wisdom, mamas.

For DS's BD party we want to hang a hoop from a tree and hang a bunch of ribbons down from it. Then I want to make balls for each child that have ribbons attached to them that stream out when they throw them. The idea would be to throw the ribbon balls through the ribbon hoop. And also to play with them a ton!

So, I'm wondering if you can help me with ideas for making those balls. I'd like to attach real ribbons, not just streamers, which would break really easily. I'm open as to ball size (these would be mostly 3 and 4yos).

Any great design and execution ideas?

Thanks!
PS -- if there's a name for the kind of ball with ribbon tail thing that I'm trying to make, I'd love to know that too!

you could make the balls more like bean bags. Then as you blanket stitched the felt together, or however you did it, you would just knot the ends of ribbon and sew it in there. I am sure that is thoroughly unclear, but I have made one, so I know it would work! Let me know if I can clear that up at all...

You could make felted balls. I saw some at fibrefest felted around tennis balls that had a bell inside. Took very little fleece and then they were wrapped with yarn is a decorative pattern.

I've made beanbags with streamers but never balls.

For the beanbags I took a couple of sqares of fabric, sewed round three sides and added my filling (I usually place my filling in a sealded plastic bag just in case the fabric splits). To sew the foutrth side pinch the bag together so that each square is folded in half and the side seams meet half way along your new seam. Sew in a few ribbons as you sew this seam.

here are some instrucitons for making a fabric ball, I'm sure you could add some ribbons into the final seam as you make it.
http://www.craftideas.info/html/ball_tutorial.html
