Hi there!
Going to visit my mom and sister (West Roxbury and Foxboro) the end of this week. I wanted to take DS1 and 2 to the beach.

What is a nice child/family friendly beach? Maybe one with close parking and clean bathrooms. (close parking so I don't have to lug the cooler and the potty, so we can run to the car for lunch and potty break).

So any recommendations not a serious long drive from West Roxbury or Foxboro? A lake is ok too.. doesn't have to be ocean!

Thanks!

I used to live in the Boston area. No locals ever went to Houghton's because of the um, element, that went there. Don't know if it's changed since then. Has been years since I lived in the area. Maybe someone closer can chime in.

I may be dense, but can you elaborate? You can PM me if you don't want to post it here. Thanks!

When I was growing up anyway there was a criminal element that hung out there. Drug dealers, theft going on. Like I said, I haven't lived in the area for a while but no one I knew went there because of that.

You could try Hinkley Pond in Medfield. It is a man-made pond. Great for small children. They have restrooms and a fun playground.
I think it is $4.00/day.

Oh, I see. I'm assuming it must not be like that anymore b/c I frequently see it recommended as a good place to take your kids.

I might go to Blue Hills in Broad Daylight on the beach. I would NOT hike or go ‘off season’ times w/just a child. Having stumbled upon a drug deal while mountain biking a few years ago, I just don’t think it’s a terribly safe area. Since I tend to go only for hiking, these days, I only go if I take my Doberman with me.

The South Shore AP group meets at Houghton's weekly-- but I don't know if people swim there. THere's a great playground and some space for picnicing etc.
We went last year around this time and need to get back for a visit.

I wish I had another pond suggestion- we have one down our road, and I have no idea how to find out how 'safe' it is to swim in.

I went to houghton's once last year, there were tons of families, it was a sat morning... however I was struck by the extreme amounts of goose poop.

i like houghtons. the boys fish with their daddy in between dips (my husband grew up in milton) and lillie and i read. its a good depth for little waders. it's a little mucky...as ponds tend to be. haven't noticed the drug dealers (i always miss the fun stuff i guess LOL) there are park rangers on site

if you want a beach go to nantasket, its great and from westie its about 40 minutes but theres a ton to do there. mini golf ice cream nice food joints

waldon pond in concord is great but tends to be crowded - there are farms out that way which is fun.

there's also the big pool in dedham, i forget what its called but you could google it

I used to live right by it and I was never aware of any public swimming access. Did I miss out? When we wanted to swim we would go to Walden Pond, and then get pissed off about the crowds and how upset Thoreau would be if he could see the noise and litter. But despite my complaints about it, there's a reason so many people go there--it's beautiful and has a nice little beach.
