Okay, I'm the mother of a 4yo little girl. She's been vax-free for 3 years now. Her father and I split up, and her and I now live with a man I've been dating for over 2 years, but he's only been an active 'parent' in her life for the past 7 months.

She's 4 now, and while we struggle back and forth with whether to homeschool her next year or send her to kindergarten, vaccinations are coming up. She 'needs' to be fully vax'ed to go to school, but I don't feel comfortable with that. My SO sees no problem with it, as his 9yo is fully vax'ed, he also admits he's never even known that people CHOOSE not to vaccinate their children, so this is a whole new concept to him.

He's very open to my choices for my child (and any future children we have), but as any good parent, would like information, and things to read, so he can get an idea of what choices we're making etc. I'm so pleased he wants to learn!!!

My problem is that I'm having trouble finding good information out there. Can anyone help me with this?

Your child does NOT have to be vaccinated at all to go to school. There are many more kids than you would believe that are not vaccinated in our schools.

http://www.vaclib.org/exemption.htm

And what specific questions does he have?

I'm pretty new to the area, to be quite frank, I moved 3000 miles to be here...lol So new to the state as well! Still looking for a DR, but have heard of a DR in my town that's very laid back on vax'ing! I'm trying to get in to see him and talk about it.

I don't know much about the school district here, but my SO is almost definate she needs to be vax'ed, this could be his misunderstanding, not his fault, but again, he never even knew people chose not to vax, ya know? So he might just think it's a NEED... Something I will have to make some phone calls about, but I do have some time

His questions are mainly, 'why?'.. Not in a bad way, if you kwim, he just honestly never knew people chose not to vaccinate, and although it's a choice I've made, if I'm honest, I don't have much REAL information on it. He wants to learn about it, learn why people choose not to etc.

Ok first of all, I'm quite sure that you do not need to vaccinate to enter school, you can claim an exemption, and say it is against your beliefs

"In every state of the union except two (Mississippi and West Virginia), parents have the legal right to exempt their children from all vaccinations. Whether or not others disagree with that decision is immaterial to that right. In light of the social and political opposition to such a choice, parents who would embark upon this unpopular course of action often have to face much greater obstacles than just learning about the dangers of vaccines."

I don't mean this in a negative way at all, but most people who don't know about vaccinating, think that it has to be done. This is because the schools and doctors often make people feel like it HAS to be done.

If they know about the Religious/philosophical exemption they think it only applies to bona fide religions, but in fact it applies to anyone.
