I have a *very* small yard but want to grow some yummy stuff to supplement our diet. Help me figure out what! I am 99.9% sure it will have to be a container veggie garden, at least for the next year or so.

I'd like to have enough tomatoes so that I could can my own and not have to buy anymore tomato paste/sauce/tomatoes. I cook a lot of chicken, so I'd like some herbs like basil and lemon thyme...anything else? We are investing in some fruit trees...what else grows well in containers that is worth growing at home vs. buying in the stores? Can I buy a huge barrel or something and grow everything together? (I'm new at this, can you tell? :LOL)

Our climate: 60ish is the lowest in the summer, can get up to high 90s or even low 100s, almost zero humidity. Lots of wind where I live.

Thanks!

I think peppers, tomatoes, tomatillos, okra and are easy to grow in containers.

Herbs such as basil, parsley, and sage are easy and I use them all the time.

I like to grow all of the ingredients for salsa.

I am not sure a barrell would work for everything, but would for some things. I like to grow things in washtubs w/ holes drilled in the bottom. A trough works well, too. Get a great potting mix...worth the investment. Makes all the difference.

I just pulled some organic garlic that I grew and it is wonderful! It was the first time I have grown garlic and I am very pleased.

Good luck and just start trying. I learn as I go along.

You can grow many types of veggies in pots The pots must be quite large. A few things you can grow would be, of course tomatoes, cukes, lettuce, eggplant, radishes, peppers, strawberries. And you really have to watch the watering when using pots, veggies grown this way take a lot of water. A few days of droopiness can affect your end product. Good luck, I'm sure you'll have lots of fun.
