So I've been neglecting my kefir grains. I had cultured raw milk with them and then covered the jar with plastic wrap and put it in the fridge intending to go back and strain out the grains...yeah. So somehow a hole got poked in the plastic wrap and "stuff" got in. I pulled it out of the fridge and it had something pink growing on the surface (it's been a month or two) and it smells like nasty socks... I strained out the grains and rinsed them with water. I now have them soaking, covered, in some sugar water (figure they need something to eat, right?). They look nice and plump and otherwise kefir-ish. Can I save them? I'm worried about whatever was growing on them transferring to a new batch. Should I do a few batches of sugared water with them and dump the water?

Help!
