I have a newly pregnant friend in the Chattanooga area and she's looking for a NCB-friendly provider for her prenatal care and birth. She'd love a waterbirth but can't any providers who offer that. Any suggestions???

I think the only way for your friend to have a water birth in the area is to do a home birth. I know a lot of the hospitals around here have taken out the labor tubs and put in more labor beds because the tubs were under-utilized. Beverly Jacks is a midwife at Women's East (at least she was there when I was PG a little over a year ago and I was researching that sort of thing). If your friend is wanting a hospital birth, but a natural focus, I've heard great things about her. I don't know any OBs though (I wasn't looking for one, so I didn't research them).

I saw Amy Anderson (also have heard good things about the other midwives in practice with her) for ds2 and really liked her. I ended up with an emergency preemie c-section so didn't actually get to labor with her. I know she let a friend of mine's dh catch a few of her babies. Also very supportive and encouraging when I mentioned that I wanted to look into the birthing center in Athens, TN (Laura, do they do waterbirths there?).

Rachel, no water births at the birth center. Their back-up OB can't get liability insurance if they do! There is a pool available for labor (and it's heavenly!).

I had my daughter at Erlanger East Pavillion on Gunbarrel. Katie Garrett with the Chattanooga Center for Women is my midwife and I cannot say enough good things about her. She is wonderful!

Hi - I used Katie Garret 1.5 years ago. I had a long 24 hour natural birth, which worked! I couldn't have done it without her and she was willing to give just about anything a try. She also worked hard with me to find the right place to deliver (we went to Women's East, which was great - we had a fabulous nurse named Christy who was from the northeast... she really helped too). I labored in the bath, but could not deliver in it. I would recommend her to anyone, anywhere. I still go to her for OB care and she's my "general" doctor too... I can't find anyone else I like here! Chattanooga is not natural birth friendly, but Katie really is!

Hi! If you friend is looking for a NCB friendly doc I would suggest Dr. Michael Seeber. Otherwise I would probably go for a midwife too. Beverly is not working right now(what a shame, she is a fantasitic MW). As far as waterbirth goes, Laura is right, the only place you will get a waterbirth is at home. Please tell your friend to feel free to call me with any questions she might have. I have been a doula for quite some time now and an apprentice to a homebirth midwife(who works in the chattanooga area) for almost 4 years. Michelle 423-309-7649

I believe someone posted the link to Carolyn Drake's site. Also, she can try http://www.birthingright.com/Welcome.html

I hope she can find someone who can meet her needs. Also, please let her know there is also an attachment parenting international support group in Chattanooga, and she can find us at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/apiofgreaterchattanooga/

Thanks, and again, best of luck to your friend!

I just delivered with Donna VanDevander in January. She was wonderful! Couldn't praise her enough. She is an experienced, motherly type. Her presence was very comforting during labor. She is with North Park OBGYN.

Katie has delivered two of my kids (both at Women's East), and I LOVE her. The nurses at Women's East are fantastic as well, and they clearly respect Katie. (During this last birth, Katie told the birth staff exactly the way that I wanted things to happen - as long as the baby came out okay - and that's exactly the way things happened.)

She is also now my general NP. She also referred me to Dr. Tom, who is a FANTASTIC pediatrician in Chattanooga.
