We are invited to a Christmas open house at our neighbours. Since we are new to the neighbourhood we really don't know them all that well. I know their names and that they have a son in his young-20s. What do you take as a hostess gift? I'm really very bad at knowing the proper etiquette for this stuff (DH and I don't go out much). I make a lot of things from scratch - would something homemade be appropriate? Food (not sure of allergies though)? Homemade soap? Some of my jams? Or do I just bring flowers? Ahh... this is stressing me out!

I say a box of candy, or sparkling cider. (in case they dont drink).

I usually bring something homemade - pumpkin bread, cookies, etc. People seem to really appreciate the effort. I also do little Christmas stitchery ornaments that I like to put on top.

Yes, if you have jam that you made, then that would be a great hostess gift. Just tie a pretty ribbon around it before you present it to them!

I like the traditional bottle of wine but I wouldn't get that if you didn't know whether they drink wine or not. I think homemade cookies or bread is a great idea!
