I have two sons ages 11 and 8 so I do keep some of my oldest clothing to save for my youngest to wear. I also bargain shop and you can probably see where this is going. They have way too much!!! So I have went through them , gotten rid of a lot but it still seems like they have more than enough but only wear a few things because I can't find the ones they want to wear.

I have come to the point that I'm getting rid of anything they don't like. They wear it right? I have to let go and realise my babies are growing up and they have a taste all their own. Plus I'm getting rid of anything that is stained or holey (with the exception of a few pairs of play clothes). Also I HATE ironing so being realistic I am getting rid of the clothes I can't just pop in the dryer to get the wrinkles out. I was just wondering if anyone had suggestions on getting rid of even more clothes. They both share a very small room (we live in a single wide mobile home). I'm trying to figure out a closet system but I know they would rather have their clothes separate from one another. My oldest wants to fold his on a large bookshelf but I don't know if that will work or not.

I'm in a 1 bedroom house.

DH has his stuff folded on a book self and it works well. Of course, he is able to keep up with it, and does not make a mess every time he grabs something.

DS has his clothes in baskets on shelves. It makes it easy since nothing really needs to be folded.

Both have some things hung. DS is to young to do his own, but what works for DD is to have a lot of hooks. This way she doesn't have to mess with hangers.

I tend to look at the available space and make the "stuff" (in this case, your sons' clothing) fit.

For my 8 year old DD, we go through ALL her clothing (and shoes and outerwear, etc) three times a year (about 6 weeks before Christmas & her birthday - late March; and the first week school is out for the summer - late July). Over the course of a few days, she "models" everything and chooses her favorite outfits. My general guideline is for her to have two weeks' worth of living clothes for the upcoming season. What I mean by "living clothes" is it isn't a straight 14 outfits. It is based on any given two-week period including all scheduled and typical activities within those two weeks.

I started this reply an hour ago and have lost my train of thought, sorry. Phone calls and child questions, etc...

If you are looking at what more you can get rid of, then I would suggest getting rid of items that only "go" with one thing and nothing else. For example, every shirt that my girls have has to match at least 2 other pants/shorts. We ended up with too many shirts and pants that did not "match" and were clean but unworn in the dresser b/c their only match had been worn with something else and was waiting to be washed.

I have a boy and a girl so my problems are somewhat allieviated by gender specific clothing. For the items I am going to pass down I have a Rubbermaid tote in the bottom of #2's closet. I also put their new clothes in the Rubbermaid tote.
I keep one medium sized tote in the basement apiece for items I don't want to part with but are outgrown. Everything else goes in a specific part of my basement for sale later.

I store the clothing in the totes by size. Largest at the bottom, smallest at the top. Clothes rods are organized from left to right, smallest to largest sizes. Adding a second shelf at the top of each closet has helped a great deal.

Since they are three years apart I would get rid of anything that can date like jeans that aren't just plain jeans or shirts with dates on them. Since you like to bargain shop, you probably don't want to keep everything anyways.

I try to keep lists of what I still need to buy for my lo's. That way I don't end up with 22 pairs of size 5 pants for my oldest...or at least I won't again.
