DS is 13 months old. He hit his head today on a bookshelf, and is probably going to have a black eye tomorrow. It's swelling a little bit, but I don't think it's really that bad. I know it hurts, but I don't want to give him children's pain meds b/c of all the additives in them. What can I give him instead? I bought some baby aspirin, but my MIL said not to give it to him b/c of the risk of Reye's Syndrome, but I thought that was only if they have chickenpox. Can somebody help me please????

Asprin is not indicated for children under 12. For pain, I find ibuprofen much more effective than paracetamol. I don't think I would give anything for a bump on the head though, unless he really seemed to be in pain? If you don't want to give childrens meds, you can give adult ones, just calculate the dose.

We use Hyland's Bumps and Bruises homeopathic remedy for stuff like that. That should also help with swelling because it has arnica (homeopathic) in it.

Also, in the rare case that I give either of my ds motrin, I do have the dye free kind in my medicine bag.

Good luck!

The adult medicines have the same poisons in them that children's ones have. I am looking for something that is chemical free.

No aspirin.

When my DD got a huge golfball in the middle of her forehead I found that it didn't bother her if we didn't touch it so she didn't need any pain reliever. Once she got over the immediate pain that I treated with frozen veg (well as much as a toddler will let you put frozen veg on them!) she was fine.

She had two really unpleasant looking black eyes for days after.

When my now 11 dd was 2 3/4, we were visiting friends in Spain and she did a face plant off one of their bar stools onto concrete. She got an huge shiner, but once she got over the shock and despite the bright purple eye, she didn't require any pain killers.
