I am dog-sitting for good friends - a Golden and a puggle - and they got into the garbage last night and ate a few chicken bones. They seem ok but I'm worried... anything I should look out for?

What are the chances of perforated intestines, internal bleeding, etc? Please tell me I'm freaking out unnecessarily... my cat ate chicken bones all the time and she was always fine!

This happened to us once and the vet told us to feed Vaseline sandwiches.
I know, it sounds awful. Maybe some bread and butter would do the same, it just lubricates and provides something for the bones to stick in rather than the dog. LOTS of butter on some squishy bread.

Ooo good idea! They'll eat anything so I will try that for sure! Thanks!

Is Vaseline ok for them to eat? I'm sure they would if I fed it to them.

We just had a thread about this a couple of weeks ago...maybe do a search?

I remember the milk soaked cotton ball thing too...

Well, it must be because my vet told me to do it. This was 20 years ago but I will never forget it because it sounded so silly!

You can place a call to any local vet's office and they will usually tell you some good things to do over the phone.

Most of the time they will be fine and the bones will be digested. Watch out for any sign of problems such as trying to poop and not being able to or vomitting unsuccessfully. Also pooping or vomitting blood - any of these signs I would take them to the vet immediately.

Hi, I'm having a similar problem. Last night, after we had finished eating we were giving our dogs the leftover scraps of chicken as a treat, I had a chicken leg which had a bit of scrappy meat hanging off of it so, I handed it to my 4 month old Staffordshire bull terrier. But she took it out of my hand- which I guess was quite easy to do so since the chicken leg was quite slippery -and managed to swallow it whole! The bone was about the size of my index finger, maybe a bit smaller and looked far too big for her to swallow, never mind digest! I'm really worried now but I don't think it will splinter because like I said before, she swallowed it whole. Will she digest it? Or will she throw up? Or would it be better to seek advice from a vet? I'm really worried. She hasn't been "off" she's just her normal, hyper, playful self
