Hello!

My DH is interviewing with a company on LI (Farmingdale) and has all but been offered the job today. It looks like we're moving there! I'm excited, since we currently live in the South, and I'm a native New Englander so this gets me close to home, friends and family.

So, I just wanted to see where there might be a cool place to live or check out. I know LI is generally pretty mainstream, but are there any crunchy pockets? Of course, I want to check in to see if there are other mamas like me around. Are you out there?

Fill me in!

Well, there are a few of us mothering mamas here on LI, but we're rather scattered.

As for more tolerant communities, I'd recommend the smaller beach towns. I live on the South Shore of Suffolk County (Bay Shore to be precise), and while it is still very mainstream, I think it's a bit less so than many central and north shore, newer, more suburban towns/neighborhoods. I'm also in one of the more ethnically and financially diverse areas of the island, which I love. I'm about 20 minutes east of Rt 110 in Farmingdale---we usually go to the movies in that area. There is also a lot of retail in Farmingdale and we've been to one good club/live music venue there---other than that I don't know too very much about Farmingdale per se.

Are you going to be buying or renting? Do you have any towns in particular that you are looking at? If you let us know what your criteria are, we may all be able to give you some suggestions. Happy relocating!

Well, the people at the company where my DH might work have recommended Wading River, ****** Place, Port Jefferson and Huntington. They've said that those are nice towns with good schools. My friend recommended Bethpage, but we heard that the schools might not be as good there. We know nothing about these places! We'd love a town that has a nice little downtown area with shops where we can walk around on weekends. I'd like to be able to take my DS to the park or the beach.

Is LI breastfeeding-friendly? I mean if I'm nursing my 16 mo DS in a store or restaurant, are people going to give me looks or say something to me?

We have moved to LI last october, I don't know too much about this place. We are on a south shore in Lindenhurst, pretty close to Bay Shore. We were lucky enough to buy a house 10 minutes walk from a town beach so I like a lot , mainly because I don't drive. I must say that Babylon is a nice little town, it's right by us.But after all I think that north side of LI has more to offer, Port Jefferson, Port Washington, Huntington- that's a nice places.
Good luck relocating. If you are here let us know so we can meet up.
... and I just want to say that is pretty main stream over here, but you can still find some breastfeeding mamas
What company is your dh interviewing with? I work for a company in Farmingdale, who also transplanted me onto the island. When I return to work after my maternety leave, they will be moving me to the Commack location. Anyway, I leave in Centereach (which is ~ 10 min from Pt Jeff) and it takes me ~35 to 40 min to get to work. We really like it out here.

BTW, when we first moved here ds was about the same age as your child. I never had anyone make a comment while feeding him in public.

Got to go. Dd need some milk and it's time for me to eat, too!

Good luck!
