Help with 6yo's constipation

631 Views 7 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  New_Natural_Mom
My 6yo son has had problems with his bowel problems for a long time now. He quite often has little 'accidents' in his underwear, only small amounts and its not solid (sorry about for giving all the details!)
I've been thinking he has a wheat intolerence, but after looking into it a bit more I think he has fecal impaction, as I read one of the signs of it is liquid poop bypasses the solid mass and leaks out (again - sorry if this is grossing you out) He can go a few days without going, and I try to get him try to poop a couple of times a day but nothing comes out.

I've tried ground flaxseed, probiotics, herbal tea/laxatives, wheat free diet. I wonder if I'm too impatient and don't try it for long enough.

Does anybody have any suggestions on how I can help him. He is starting to get embaressed about it, and I'm over cleaning his underwear.

hhmmmm......

i havent had experience with this but, let me see if i can help

-probiotics: are you giving them regularly? i would start with a lot to heal gut and then maintenance amount daily.

-does he drink enough water? maybe too much fiber and not enough water makes it runny...

-is his diet pretty well rounded: fresh fruits, and lots of vegetables, whole grains etc?

other than physically, does he seem nervous about anything? how long has this been going on?

and lastly, if you think it is definitely something physical maybe seek the advice of a trained homepath or something along those lines, because you might just have the dosage of things not right. i hope he feels better soon

We have been going through this with my son for the past 3 + years. Look up encopresis online and see if the symptoms match. From what you said, it sounds like it to me. My DS had an x-ray this past fall and he was filled up with #2. I never thought he was constipated because he would go in his pants a little bit and it wasn't solid. It was almost diarrhea like.

We started him on Natural Calm (a powdered magnesium drink) and within days, he was going #2 in very large amounts. When ever he gets a little constipated, we give it to him and he clears out very quickly.

It is worth trying. I am sorry you are going through this. It is so very frustrating to figure out, but if it is encopresis, you can take care of it fairly easily, you just have to really watch the your DS's bathrooming to make sure he is going everyday.

I'm so glad to know I'm not the only one who thought this is a miracle!! I thought it was too good to be true because both DS and I have always dealt with bowel troubles. Everything that helped us "go" helped too much, left cramps and so we were left with either constipation or diarrhea.

I was thinking it was too easy and too good to be true since we've had this trouble so long, but that's all it took!

It really does feel like a miracle cure!!! I was to the point of hopelessness when we tried Natural Calm. When it worked, I was thrilled to pieces!!

Thank you so much! I looked up encopresis and it sounds just like ds.

I live in New Zealand so I'm not sure if we have the same products here, will any magnesium supplement/drink work or does this Natural Calm have other ingredients?
The container says Magnesium 615 mg (elemental from magnesium citrate). I think if you went to a health food store and asked for a powdered magnesium citrate drink that it would work the same way.
Aloe juice! 1 Tsp/ day and all will be well. We use it to keep our 1yo DS regular.
