help with an Onbuhimo Japanese carrier

1031 Views 4 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  Jules411
I recently ordered the Onbuhimo back carrier and have tried to get my 10mo dd in it without much success. The directions are in Japanese but has illustrations that make sense, but hard to do on your own.

Anyone have any tips on a site with english instructions, photos or their own experience that can help me out.

I have a NN pouch which I use, but am not thrilled with, and a Baby Bjorn that was OK. I am hoping I like this one better!

Thanks for any help you can offer!

Actually, it just looks hard to do but it is really very easy to do on your own..I would say after a pouch or ring sling, it is actually the easiest to do on my own of any of the slings I have tried (which is seriously a lot
All you really need to do is follow the pictures and you should be all set. I would recommend doing it over a sofa or bed just in case till you get used to it.

What you are going to do is:

1. Take the straps under your little ones arms and hold the straps tight so that your baby is secure. Try holding your little one in front of you by the straps first to see how secure it is...my baby LOVES this game
.

2. Then you kind of swing your little one around your shoulder still holding your straps together so they are holding your little one securely high on your back. Again, my baby LOVES this manuver as well

3. Leaning forward, seperate the straps and take one over each shoulder. If you leave your little one's arms so that they are still over the top of the carrier, the straps will still be holding the baby quite securely.

4. Twist the straps around eachother....this is a more attractive look than just crossed but either will work well with this carrier. You can also use this carrier without crossing the straps at all...just leave them rucksack style. It all works well.

5. Take one strap and put it through the ring on the bottom of the carrier. Hold on this end a bit so make sure that it stays in place and your baby is pretty secure at this point. Then take the second strap and put it through other ring.

6. Holding both ends, stand straight up and bounce a bit and pull down on the strap to get your baby high on your back. When you are happy with how high your baby is, tie a knot and you are done.

I find my Onbuhimo really fast and easy to do on the go. It is super comfortable and because the piece of fabric is so small, really nice and cool for summer for both me and Isaac.

Hope this helps!

I hope they help! There is also a really helpful video of a mom putting on her Onbuhimo here:

This isn't exactly how I do it...I hold both straps together in one hand as I put Isaac over my shoulder but this was the video that helped me understand what I was trying to do exactly.

LMK how it goes. I really like my Onbuhimo a whole lot and find it one of my easiest carriers to use for back carries.

OK, I was able to get it on. Couple of questions...

Do the straps get crossed behind your neck (i.e. before you put over your shoulders)? My dd got her arm out and it was under the strap so I was wondering if I should have crossed them between her and my neck/upper back before it went over my shoulders...make sense?

Where should the "waist strap" be on your body? Mine was up near my ribs. right or wrong? Not too comfortable but I am not used to it, also my dd is 10mo and about 21lbs.

Should she be riding pretty high on my back?

Thanks, Alison for your help. I want the carrier to work for me!

The video was helpful!
