SO here we are- end of year time for tests/evaluations. My 7yr old simply has his portfoio to be reviewed. How do I find a teacher to do this? We're pretty much *on our own* in HS'ng land here. I certianly DONT want to put him in a testing ground within the public school at his tender age- any other FL momma's out htere that can help with finding an evaluator? Thanks so much inadvance!

We are in Florida. Many of the hs support groups have listings of certified teachers who can evaluate a portfolio. Many of the groups will help with a list, even if you are not a member. I think the local school districts keep a list of evaluators that are available in our area - I can't remember. I also have a 7 year old, and am a bit new at this still myself. I hope this helps. We are near the Daytona Beach/DeLand area.

I think FPEA has evaluators listed on their site. What part of FL are you in?
I am on a Yahoo Group and I simply asked. I found a nice lady in Deland (I live in Winter Springs) who does our annual evaluations. It's about a 30 minute drive for me but it's only once a year and I like her. We usually meet in a park where she does evaluations for a group not just my children although last time I met her at a library and it was just my family! I like her because each year we do different stuff which is not very school-ish and she respects us! No personal critiques or anything. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/FL-Hom...n-Law/messages

FPEA has a drop down menu for support groups according to districts and you could email to get a list:

http://www.fpea.com/

Read the list of counties under the district number after you click on one to determine which one you are. For example mine is District 6 which serves Lake, Orange, Osceola, Polk, Seminole, and Sumter counties: http://www.fpea.com/Association/district6.htm
Hi...I'm in Central Florida.

Do you know you have the option of signing up with a 600 school and then you aren't required to answer to the state at all?
I recently registered all three of my kids with AEI. I think this may be the link, if not, I'll check for you:

We love the freedom it brings!

Edited to add that I just realised the link I posted may not be allowed. If so, I'm sorry and I understand if you delete it.
instead of the state? Like sending in attendence records, birth certificate (for proof of age), physical exam, immunization records, and the issue that public schools don't have to let private schoolers participate in extra curricular activities but they let in homeschoolers? (I'm not argueing with you just thinking there isn't 100% freedom in anything.)

I've thought about incorporating or rather setting up a private school for myself to save on eval fees ($20 for the first child and $10 for every child thereafter) and the fact I am offended that the state thinks I need to get evals in the first place! LOL!

I'm only a high school graduate yet I've taught 3 children how to read by age 5 so I must not be that bad eh?

The only thing I have to keep up with is sending them an e-mail with "dates" on it that have to equal 180 days per year.

That's it.

As opposed to being required to maintain a portfolio (and have it available for inspection if required in 15 days notice), put my children through an annual evaluation of their "progress", and have to be concerned that they find my children's progress "at a level commensurating with her or his ability"

Like I said, the freedom is something we enjoy.

You don't need to send the health form OR the immunization forum. Just a letter saying you are morally or religiously against it.

And proof of age is only for those entering "kindergarten".

If participating in school activites is important to you, then no, going with a 600 school would not be something you would do. Personally, we don't have a need for school for activites.

The woman who runs the 600 school I registered with also runs a very informative yahoo list about homeschooling laws in Florida.
Even if you don't join the school, the list is informative.

Where are you maybe some of us can recommend some.
I am in Seminole County and know 2
Terrie
and she and another poster, Teri from LIFE, encouraged me to write to my congressmen!

I thought I read there is one state where you are totally free to homeschool and you don't even have to send in a notice much less get evals or remember to send in emails about attendence.
