I'm a lacto-ovo vegetarian, and was dx'ed with high cholesterol last year. (Go figure). I eat very few eggs, and stick to low or nonfat dairy. I'm coming under heavy pressure from my MD to go own some sort of drug, but the drugs frighten me. Went to an alternative MD, who soaked me for $4000 in unreimbursable expenses, which didn't lower my LDL one bit, and then told me to come back and let's see what else is going on (NOT!!)

I eat fairly well, have my lapses, but am totally floored by this!!!

Any ideas?

Hi Janet,

Have you considred Chinese herbal medicine?? It will really help. I treat patients with high cholesterol very successfully.

To find someone in your area, go to www.nccaom.org and click on the find a practioner link.

Some stuff you can do on your own -

1. start taking a hawthorn supplement. Most people think of it for the heart but don't realize it also does a great job of lowering cholesterol.

2. Take a high quality cod liver oil (Carlson's or Nordic Naturals) daily. It will help lower the inflammation in the blood vessels where the cholesterol sticks. (Cholesterol sticks to inflammation).

3. Red Yeast Rice is what the statin drugs are made from. They took one active ingrediement from it and made the statin drugs. Red Yeast Rice when used whole works much better and at lower doses.

4. Eat lots of leafy green vegetables and beets to support your liver. Even if you aren't getting lots of cholesterol from your diet, your liver produces it and it produces more when you are stressed or if there is a family history, it can be genetic.

Hope this is helpful!
Good Luck!

I'm in a similar situation (LDL is very high). This runs on both sides of my family. I haven't gone on meds. I think increasing excercise should help. Dh has crazy high trigl. and was told fish oil would help.

Ask for your numbers ; Trigylcerides, LDL, and HDL
if those numbers are in proper proportional levels but the total high, I wouldn't worry much. You may have a genetic propensity for high cholesterol going on that's totally normal for YOU.

Latest research about eggs shows they do not affect cholesterol in a negative way.

My extended family has genetically high cholesterol and we are constantly pressured to take statin drugs. Isn't going to happen. Statin drugs DO NOT reduce the incidence of heart attack or stroke and the side effects can be very deleterious. I'd do your research on them very well before agreeing to take them.
