I'm kind of freaking out right now. For about the last week, week and a half, when my daughter tries to poop, she makes this crying, grunting noise. Her face turns a little red as she pushes and she screams and cries. I try to gently rub her tummy and it is rock hard as she pushes. I also ly her on the floor and "bicycle" her legs, to try to help get it out. She has not had a big poop, its like a chunk the size of a ping pong ball. It is pretty firm, the consistency is very very thick. When I squeeze it, it just breaks, doesn't get mushy or "wet". Smells like normal poop....

I don't know what I'm even asking here. I guess, is this normal? Why is she crying when she tries to push it out? Is it suppose to be that thick? Is it from solids? Could it be something I eat? Is there anything else I can do?

We don't have insurance so I'd rather not just head right to the dr unless you all think this sounds serious. I have a naturopath, but I don't know exactly how "qualified" she is at seeing infants? BTW, my daughter is 7.5 months.

Thanks!

ETA: Usually her poop is pretty wet and mushy, real liquidy, and slightly thicker if she ate solids that day. But this doesn't even get mushed around in her diaper. It comes out like a round chunk. And then it just sits there against her bum-hole.

Hey CK - you know what I did when my son (same age as your daughter) went through this a few weeks ago, was stop all solids and just nursed and nursed him. It took about two days and then he pooped for about two days straight.

And we discovered that millet was not a good "first food" after all. We haven't had any problems since then. No more millet for a while...binds the boy up!

We have also been eating a bit more fruit since then as well. Big hits have been cantaloupe, pear, and nectarine. mmm.

ds had this happen a few times, too. I'm sure its gotta hurt coming out! We'd do the old diluted prune juice. Just like an ounce of prune juice with an ounce or two or water. We only did that a few times and it's nothing I would encourage on a regular basis, but to help the discomfort, it definetly helps.

Have you encouraged your babe to drink a bit of water? With starting solids you may need to encorporate that as well.

No I haven't given her much *water. I very well may stop the solids for awhile. And just bf more (as if I could bf anymore than I already do, lol). Good idea FSM, I will start giving her more fruit. Now do you mash them up or give them pieces to suck on?

I usually hold the fruit (cantaloupe, pear) and he pulls it toward his mouth and sucks on it or gums off parts (watch this step - FSB frequently gets too much in there). Alternately, I tear off little pieces and offer them up.

what do you mean, cut out solids and do fruit? fruit is a solid in one form or another. do you mean pureed fruit? we don't do pureed fruit because he doesn't seem to like it. If we break off teeny tiny pieces of the fruit and offer them, he seems to like it.

I think you're onto something with the water drinking though!

Sorry, I meant that I was going to cut out the jarred baby food, and start just breastfeeding. And offer some fruit if she seems hungry, rather than jarred food.
