My DS (5 mos. old) is recovering from an ear infection and cold. he is very, very mucusy. Any suggestions on helping him get it all out? He is pretty miserable..

Lots and lots of nursing, as the fluids will help loosen things up. Holding him in a steamy bathroom might bring some relief too. Can he sleep more upright? Maybe in a bouncy seat or carseat?

When dd1 had lots of congestion right after birth, a nurse held her on her arm, at an angle where her head was leaned forward, legs toward the nurses body to help expel some of the congestion/goop. That might help?

Oh, and some use a bulb syringe. I think you can get them now that have a little guard to help keep them from being inserted too far.

Hope he feels better soon so you both can get some rest.

Hi there,

my guy is in the same boat, although further along on the recovery train than yours.

we were told that a 'cool mist humidifier' in the room at night will help keep the mucous liquified (rather than drying out) and thus be easier to suction out with the nasal aspirator. other than that, the steamy bathroom is good, as was mentioned.

we also did some saline spray, let him lie down with his head lower than his body for a couple minutes, and that helped break stuff out so we could use the aspirator.

it sucks when your baby has a cold! hope he feels better soon.

We've been spending a lot of time in the steamy bathroom trying to get dd's nose less plugged. That and the bulb aspirator...
