I just feel like I'm bashing my head on a brick wall, ladies. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/banghead.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="banghead"><br><br>
A woman I know from another board has just told the story of how her little baby boy contracted bacterial meningitis from the doc's instruments not being properly sterilised.<br><br>
He was circed in the hospital after his birth, IIRC, and became ill after a few days and spent <span style="text-decoration:underline;">two months</span> in PICU.<br><br>
The worst thing is, she doesn't even regret the circ!!! <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/yes.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="exclaim"> All she says is thank the Lord for saving my son, blah blah blah. And she won't take any legal action because "the doc is a Christian and he felt really bad". <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/headscratch.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="headscratch"><br><br>
This woman is nuts! <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/nut.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="nut"> Thanks for letting me share.

puke<br><br>
just puke<br><br>
I don't think Christian doctors have any business being in that business. But that is just me. And I don't want to get your thread pulled for religious discussion violations, etc, so let me know if I need to edit!

She cannot possibly regret the circ because then she will have to admit that she put her newborn boy through hell for no good reason. Who can live with that kind of guilt? Much better to live in a state of denial. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/shake.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="shake">

that's priceless! if he had actually died, do you think she would have had the same reaction? my son is dead and it could have easily been prevented, but the dr felt really bad about so i'm okay with it.... <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/irked.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="irked">:<br><br>
i guess this means she will be sure to contact him for all her future son's surgery.... <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/greensad.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="greensad">

Kathleen, is this woman in Australia too? I thought the circ rate was really low there...and I know the Australian pediatrican association (don't remember the formal name) has issued a strong policy statement against routine circ.

No, she's in the US.<br><br>
Out of the mothers' group I attended with my first son, there were 5 boys are 2 were circed. Most people I know IRL don't do it.<br><br>
My first son was born in a public hospital, and they don't even mention it to you. The only way to get it done is if you have private insurance and pay for your doctor to do it. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/greensad.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="greensad">

Sick. That poor little boy.I still don't see how someone can put their baby boy through this! Having to put your child through surgery to save their life is horrible enough(BTDT,ds had open heart surgery)!<br><br>
On one board I occasionaly lurk on,there is one parent who had her ds (with the same heart defects as my ds) circed.He ended up with a heart transplant,a direct complication from the circ.They joke that he has a "million dollar penis",and that it looks good. :puke :puke :puke It just makes me so <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/splat.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="splat"><img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/banghead.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="banghead"><img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/Cuss.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="cuss"><img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/censored.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="censored"><img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/bawling.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="bawl"><img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/bawling.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="bawl"><img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/bawling.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="bawl"> .<br><br>
I've seen a lot of parents who circ their children(heart babies),even though the child needs a special team of drs in the OR,and has to be monitored closely for at least 24hrs. :puke <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/bawling.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="bawl"> This is totally unnecessary!!The pain the child goes through, isn't the life saving surgery more than enough!?!What does it really matter what a child's penis looks like!Just sick. :puke <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/bawling.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="bawl"><img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/angry.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="angry">

That's just......horrific.<br><br>
How on earth can that be legal?<br><br>
And what on earth are the hospitals/doctors thinking of? They have a child fighting for his life and they <i>circumcise</i> him?<br><br>
That's scraping the barrel of wickedness in my view.

And Like Daisyuk said, how can the doctors do that? They are putting his life at risk for a cosmetic procedure. The should lose their licences. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/soapbox.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="soapbox">

My father, now eighty years old, lost one of his brothers to circumcision. I never got to know that uncle, since he died in infancy. I don't have a son.

As if it's not horrible enough for that baby, how about the other baby who was farther down on the transplant list and didn't get a heart because this one got used on a baby who otherwise would not have needed it? <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/bawling.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="bawl">

Well, actually I'm not but none of my words can be printed here. <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/censored.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="censored"><br><br>
Too bad there's not a frickin' BRAIN TRANSPLANT list for some of these people (and I use the term people loosely).

It's a horrific story, but one thing puzzles me. How do they know the bacteria came from the doctor's instruments? It would have taken days for the baby to get sick and it not like they could have gone back and cultured the physicians instruments - so just wondering how they could know this?<img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/headscratch.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="headscratch"> Something sounds fishy to me.

I don't suppose it matters. It was because of the circ that the baby almost died. Whether he was infected by the instruments, by post-op care, by non-sterile dressings, by random chance. It does not matter. His life was almost lost for no darn good reason.

My question was how does anyone know this? Menigitis is not unheard of in the neonatal period and rarely is it known where the infection came from (unless it was Group B Strep contracted from the mother's birth canal). How would someone know that this was the source of infection? That is the part that makes no sense to me.

I'm guessing that they saw some very typical signs of infection at the circumcision site. Redness, swelling, pus, etc.<br><br>
My daughter (who was not circumcised) went into septic shock and DIC on her 6th day of life. A pretty cursory exam told us where the infection was "coming from" Her belly button <img alt="" class="inlineimg" src="http://www.mothering.com/discussions/images/smilies/smile.gif" style="border:0px solid;" title="smile"> She had an infection called omphalitis.<br><br>
When she was cultured, she tested positive for group B & G strep & a "rare" staph (the kind you only find in hospitals). She had had umbilical lines placed the day before.....it wasn't a long leap from swollen belly-rare staph to "aha" the lines must have been contaminated.<br><br>
I'm guessing it was a pretty similar scenario w/ this baby.
