I feel for her. It is awful to have a child in the NICU and it must be awful to watch them go through this.

That being said, there is virtually no evidence a high vaccine compliance rate (which we have) will do anything to combat pertussis.

It would not surprise me at all if letting people get pertussis plus keeping newborns under 4 months old or so away from the masses was more protective for vulnerable newborns.

It seems to work for Sweden. Sweden withdrew recommendation of the WC vaccine in 1979 and we haven't heard of epidemics of whooping cough sweeping through Sweden. Apparently, the majority of whooping cough cases occur in children older than this baby, when their bodies are better able to cope with it. Then they are immune for life and can transfer immunity to their babies.
