so sorry to hear about your looming loss. when we had to put asleep our (evil) cat, it helped me to just take a day (well, ok, a week) to be miserable. i got out as many photos of her as i could gather and was weepy and such - i was not fun to be around at all. it IS ok to be miserable when a pet dies. i also suggest that you do something special with your cat's remains.

for what it is worth, society is taking pets more seriously - hallmark now makes "sorry your pet died" cards.

I'm so sorry about your kitty.

I know I too will be in your shoes soon as my childhood cat is approching 20 now and is starting to ail. My parents said for now he is doing well but he is definatly going downhill.

In a way you are saving your cat, he's sick and his qaulity of life is going down, your not letting him suffer. I think it's great to bury him in the backyard since you two have such a special bond.

I wish you strengh and here is a little poem for you:

If it should be that I grow weak
and pain should keep me from my sleep
then you must do what must be done
for this last battle can't be won

You will be sad, I understand
don't let your grief then stay your hand
for this day more than all the rest
your love for me must stand the test

We've had so many happy years
what is to come can hold no tears
you'd not want me to suffer so,
the time has come, please let me go

Take me to where my needs they'll tend,
and please stay with me to the end,
hold me firm and speak to me
until my eyes no longer see.

I know in time that you will see,
the kindness that you did for me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
from pain and suffering I've been saved.

Please do not grieve, it must be you
who has this painful thing to do.
We've been so close we two these years,
Don't let your heart hold back its tears.

My heart goes out to you. It is so difficult to know that this must be done, yet not have it happen yet - you are in mourning now but can not yet come to any peace, especially if your cat is suffering. I wish a comfortable passing for your cat, and much comfort to you in your loss.

Our 16 year old cat died the night before we had to take him to the vet to be put to sleep. He died in my arms. My healing began once he was gone, but he will be forever missed. It is no small thing you are enduring. Be kind and gentle with yourself.

that poem was a little hard to read. But I just lost my beloved cat. I too buried him in our yard and created a special garden for him. It gives me comfort to know he's there and that I've done something to honor him.
