I took a photo of my belly today, and I noticed how high I seem to be carrying compared to other mamas I know. I'm not especially short or tall - 5ft 5 - but I feel as though the baby is sitting high. I'm really curious about the kind of factors which determine how you carry.. is it luck, body shape, muscle tone?

I posted a pic on my blog...

Just curious!

Baby's position has a lot to do with it, whether they're head down and whether they've dropped low and even engaged yet. By the way you may seem huge to you but that's quite a shapely pregnant belly I think and just the right size, you've got the bump in front and that's it you really lucked out. Anyway mine just went significantly lower at 34 weeks, the head actually was engaged in my pelvis for a day last week but came back out again. Freaked me out a little, that's supposed to happen near the very end not yet.

I carried my son very high, like a shelf I could rest stuff on! And he was head down for many months. This one- head down also since early dec but has been lowlowlow since the beginning. I couldn't even wear the same maternity pants/skirts as before- I loved the "under-the-belly" style before, total disaster this time around, my pubic hair would be showing if I wore that stuff.

Weird. Kids are different from the get-go I guess.

For me, ab muscles seem to have made a difference. My first two, I carried VERY low. This one I'm carrying high, but I was also going to the gym for the year before I got pregnant, and I'd done a lot of abs work and such. My abs were *strong* compared to last two pregnancies. And I think carrying high has helped this one to flip around different positions. He's been breech, transverse, diagonal, vertex, transverse again.
I think he'll eventually settle into vertex when he's ready.

In my last pregnancies, even though I carried low the whole time, I was still able to "drop" at the end as well. With the last one, I dropped at 35 weeks and people at church noticed it (got multiple comments that Sunday). I had the baby 2 weeks later.

I'm carrying ridiculously high. The baby's a girl, and I'm a short one with a VERY short torso. She's head-down, but nowhere near engaged, even though I'm 36 weeks and already 2 cm dilated. I can't wait for her to drop-- it would be so nice to breathe again, and to remember Life Before Heartburn.
