My 17 mo ds seems to run a temperature frequently. Right now, he's at about 100.1-100.2, and has been there for 2 days. He has NO symptoms, is his usual very happy self, he's eating and sleeping normally. He's even been saying new words at a surprising rate over the past few days! I am not treating with anything at this point. But I can't help but be a bit worried. I take his temp with a digital thermometer, rectally.

I'm wondering, does anyone know if a child's temp can just run a little high normally?

And, how long can I safely let this go? I should mention that almost since birth he's run a bit high. . not all the time, not every day, but frequently w/o symptom. He was hospitalized at 18 days old with a 103 temp (turned out to be a UTI), which is a LONG story. He also had a number of ear infections last winter (another long story!).

Everybody is different about temperatures and fever. My chiropractor's daughter went 4 days with a temp of 104. I'm not sure I would be comfortable with that.....but he was.

I guess I wouldn't be too concerned since your ds is acting "normal". I'd be more concerned if he was getting dehydrated or lethargic or something.

Above all else, use your intuition. If you feel it's time to really get him checked.....do it. If you feel like it's still okay, wait it out a bit more.

A low-grade fever often means that there is an infection somewhere. I would probably call the doctor just to see what he/she thinks, I wouldn't want to let it go for too long in case it is an ear infection or a UTI that could cause more damage.

I know you said you didn't want to get into the long story of the UTI, but was he ever checked for VUR (vesicoureteral reflux)? Because he could be having UTIs without any obvious symptoms (other than the fever), esp. since you say he has these low fevers often. If he hasn't already been checked for VUR, I'd consider looking into that.

Yes, he had a VCUG and an ultrasound, and those tests showed his "plumbing" to all be working properly--no reflux. But, it has always seemed to me that maybe he is suffering from continued UTI's--it's just that he doesn't exhibit ANY symptoms.

The temp is back up. I'm going to make an appointment for tomorrow--check the ears and check the urine.
