"Hinduism is a very tolerant religion and we have no problems if our images are used in a respectful manner. But to use the image of Lord Rama on a shoe, when we don't even wear shoes inside our temples, is disrespectful and disgraceful. It has hurt the sentiments of over one billion Hindus in the world and yet Minelli have not agreed to withdraw the sale."
*note. I didn't follow up to get info on the protest.

Here's the protest news http://news.indiainfo.com/2005/06/13/1306uk-hindus.html

He said the protest was not just about the company, but wider issues of religious intolerance in France. "Hindu women and men cannot put bindis, tilaks and other forehead markings in school and other places due to recent legislation passed in the French Parliament," he claimed.
Something similar to this happened about a year ago with Buddhists and Victoria's Secret.

VS put the image of the Buddha on a bathing suit and Buddhists organized a letter writing campaign to stop it. VS pulled the bathing suit with an apology.
That sounds about the right way to go about it. I wonder why this French company won't apologize or let the Hindus dispose of their merchandise?
Edited and deleted. A shining example of why I shouldn't post before coffee.

Since France has seperation of church & state, a law was recently passed banning ostentatious religious symbols from official buildings, esp schools I believe... Since all are equal - libertie fraternitie egalitie - nobody is to be marked as different... So schoolchildren in state schools cannot wear the bindi, the veil, the kippah, a crucifix etc.

The Muslim children have especially been affected by this. The girls must, in the more religious families, wear the head coverings after puberty. Many have been forced to drop out of public schools.

Oh! I totally misunderstood what was going on.

I thought that Hindus as a group were being singled out.
