If your baby is actually eating the dirt, you might want to check where it's coming from...dirt from areas of town that were settled pre-1970s can contain lead from leaded gasoline fumes or lead paint, and soil from agricultural land can contain lead from leaded pesticides used in the past. Lead tastes sweet, so babies like to eat leaded dirt. Just something to look out for.

Healthy soil, I believe has the same composition of nutrients and minerals and trace elements that are required for a healthy person. Thats why organic gardening is so important to have healthful food. You really are what you eat

what about dried leaves? Grass? Dead bug? Oh, and ds2 tried to eat a rock this morning.

And I fished a shell out of his mouth at our community pool the other day - I have NO idea where that came from. I could have sworn the floor was empty.

As you might have guessed, ds2 started crawling last week. And now he is FAST. I'd gotten lazy since it's been a couple of years since my first ate random things (okay, so he will still try to eat french fries off the floor at the mall, but at least he is trying to eat gross FOOD).

I am very happy I insisted on using the eco-friendly lawn company. At least the dead bug wasn't killed by a pesticide.

Siobahn, your DS sounds like my DS1! That kid loves to anything he finds on the ground even still at 2! Sometimes I think he must have pica!
The kid will eat dirt, sand, chalk, bugs...sometimes I wonder if it's just for the shock factor when he sees my face. (It is like a reflex to make the "ooooh" face when you hear such things crunch. blech!)
