My little Audrey has been a great little nurser from day one, and in the first two weeks of bf'ing her we only experienced minor latch issues and only on my right side. We got through that and have had no other problems.

For the last week and a half - two weeks, I've noticed a burning pain when I put her on my left breast. And, it remains tender feeling on the nipple area between nursing sessions.

I can't find any signs of thrush, poor latch, or mastitis, and my ducts aren't plugged. So, what could be wrong?

sounds like a plugged duct to me. I've had them without any signs besides the pain. Thrush can also be symptomless. Try applying heat before nursing, really hot showers and hand expressing in the hot water, changing nursing positions, etc.
hope it gets better soon!

Sore nipples and pain in between nursings is a sign of thrush! You don't need to see the white patches. Read this:

http://www.kellymom.com/bf/concerns/...resources.html

It's not a plugged duct. I know what those are because I had those horribly bad when I was pumping with my first.

I also had thrush with my first. She had it, and I had an opening in my nipple that wouldn't heal not to mention shooting pain.

With this, I only met one sign of it being yeast:

Do you feel a burning sensation on your nipples either during or between feedings?

And, I'm really not convinced that is what it is based on my experiences with thrush before.

You mentioned pain in between feedings...What does your nipple look like after she is done nursing? color? any creases? how long does it hurt for? Is it just the nipple that is painful or the whole breast? ANd if it is just the nipple, where on the nip?

Yea, the open wounds are the worst for thrush! That's why I gave up nursing my oldest at 10 months, because neither of us could get rid of it. I had that wound for a month and Genevieve had thrush for over 2 months. It was sad to give it up.

I'll look after she gets done nursing next time on that side, however, she just nursed (before I saw this post) and there was no pain and there isn't pain now. It's strange really. It's not so much the whole breast but just the nipple. Seems like it's on the end.

Ok, well I guess I was wrong...I guess it could be a blocked duct because I have a bleb on my nipple. I even let Audrey nurse twice in a row on that side and the bleb is still there. I didn't think it was a blocked duct because when I had them with Genevive they were in my breast tissue...hard knots in my breasts. My nipples were unaffected.

So, how can I treat the bleb?

Go to kellymom that I linked to earlier. Do a search on blebs and/or blocked ducts.

You could have both a blocked duct and thrush. I'd treat for both.

Ok, the update is that last night Audrey slept from 8:30 - 5:00 this morning. I accidentally wore an underwire to bed which means I was engorged something terrible. When I nursed Audrey on that side - yowzers it was painful and burned. I took a hot shower, massaged and tried to break open the bleb. That was unsuccessful so I tried breaking it open with a sterilized needle, no such luck and just resulted in a lot of blood. I put a call into my OB and LC. Now my breast is painful all around and there are some knots in it. And, I felt off this morning in the shower, I almost passed out. Guess my shower was too hot.

The LC said to soak my breast in hot water before I nursed. I did that, and that didn't do anything. And, said if that do anything to talk to my ob. Then right after, the nurse called me and said warm compresses, and nurse, and pump, and cold cabbage leaves to help with the swollen/tenderness. She called in a Rx for me an antiobiotic so it wouldn't get any worse. But, I'm aprehensive with antibiotics because of bacteria vaginosis and yeast infections. She told me I could take Monistat 7 along with it. Anyway, I'm going to give it a few days, but she said the antibiotic would keep mastitis from setting in.

Anyway, I pumped and got a good 4 oz out. Could have gotten more but I got bored and needed to see what one of my daughters was up to. But the bleb was still there.

Oh and nurse said my OB would not break open the bleb, that I'd have to be sent to a breast specialist for that. I asked what were my alternatives and she said to do what was recommended and see if it would reabsorb back into my breast.

I'm guessing you won't go 9 hours without nursing on that breast again?

Yowch! I agree, if you have a tendency towards thrush you want to be careful with the antibiotics. Take echinacea instead! One warm shower might not do it. Sit and rest as much as possible. Seriously. Or stay in bed. Get help with the other kid(s) and meals. Get a crock pot and a handful of washcloths and keep putting them on your breast. Nurse a lot or pump if baby won't nurse.

Once or more a day, instead of a shower, take a hot bath and kneel and lean over into the tub so your breast are hanging into the water. Express in this position or massage and then pump when you get out. Espress firmly as poss, or use a comb and draw it towards the nipple.

Cabbage leaves work. Crush one slightly with a rolling pin to force out the healing juices. when it warms up get a fresh cold one and repeat.

Good luck. No wire bras til you are all better!

Hey, it's not my fault she slept that long! Usually she wakes once between that time. She must have been pooped and thought that breast needed a rest! :LOL

Your rest advice made me laugh. Just as I was telling a friend that my husband has often told me people since we moved he works 10 minutes from the house, and if I ever need anything he can quickly come home. He never does!

My crockpot has got pork in it! But, that is a great idea about keeping the rags in there.

I do manually express in the shower and even when I hung my boob over a bowl full of hot water I did then too, but it's not going away.

One question I have, is that it's getting really painful for Audrey to nurse on that side. But, I know babies can suck harder than what a pump can do. But, its killing me to let her nurse on that side. Would it be ok just to pump that side until this gets cleared up? Pumping didn't hurt.

ok, I did a hot bath and soaked for awhile. Then, I tried massaging my breasts and while the knots are better, the bleb is still there and shows no signs of opening up. It just seems like nothing is working.

Clean out that crockpot!

Pumping is fine if nursing hurts. Just move the milk.

Make your dh come home.

Motrin might help with the inflammation and pain.

Rest rest rest and drink drink drink (water).

It might take a couple more days but it will get better.

When you are better, keep taking it easy. Overdoing is the most common cause of breast infections.

Daryl - thank you so much. Sometimes I think I should give you ladies my husband's phone number so you can talk to him. Funny thing is that last night when he got home...and not very early at that...he said that one of his employees (yes, a guy that works for him) got into a yelling match with him when my husband told him he was heading out because of some health problems I was having. Of course this guy doesn't have kids and isn't married so he doesn't understand but it really upset me.

The update is my breast is sore and very tender. Bleb is still present. Seems like my milk production has slowed way down too. I feel sick to my stomach but don't know if that's from this or from the ice cream I had before bed. I've been taking motrin.
