The prefolds in my sisters stash she gave me are getting holey, no holes when she gave them & she used them plenty. These prefolds are larger than the gerbers, much softer & more absorbant with light blue serging, so I think they are CPFs. I thought they were tough? I wash with CHeer free & oxy clean. Is the oxyclean doing it? Is it my water? Anybody know how to test water to see if it is hard/soft, etc? I can't have these things just tearing up on me now! what should I do?

Prefolds do have a finite lifespan - yours just might be nearing theirs. How did your sister wash them? Did she use bleach on them? How long do you go between loads of diapers?

A lot of my prefolds have holes in them, but I figure that's because they're on their 3rd+ baby, ad the holes are bound to happen eventually. Just because they didn't have holes when your sister was using them doesn't necessarily mean you're doing anything wrong.

DD had some acidic EBF poops that actually ate thru some of our UBPFs. Could that be it?

I've heard that oxyclean can be harsh on diapers. Maybe someone else can elaborate, I don't use it.

I read something about Oxy Clean a long time ago and have tried to find it again, but can't. But I seem to remember someone saying that if an item of clothing has ever been bleached, that using Oxy on it will cause it to get holes/ shred. So if your sis bleached them before and you use Oxy, then that may be why. I'm not sure of course, they just may be old. Sorry you are getting holes.

Oh, eta that I have a couple infant ubcp's that are falling apart. They were new when Bret was born and I have washed them maybe every other week (I just use them for odds and ends now) so they are not that old... not even 2 yrs! I also have holes in fitteds I own too.

thanks for all the replies. Maybe she did bleach them, I will check. For now we are gonna lay off the Oxyclean & see wat happens, I think I will go thru & mark all the holes with a sharpie so I can tell if I get more! It really bothers me to be like- is that new or was it there???

My old - 4 year-old prefolds have holes in them and some are shredded. I think they were DSQ prefolds- not sure if that is the same as the cpfs I have now. I got these form a catalog before I was online.

They do wear out, though I've heard people had them through multiple children and mine didn't last through 2 kids.

1/4 cup calgon might be a good oxyclean alternative.
