I was wondering if there were any special meals or dishes you made for special occassions. Im looking ahead to the holiday season. I know its miles off still but I want plenty of practice time. So vegan/vegetarian recipes for special meals for special occassions, Got any? And hey, while were at it... How much does food play in your preparation for special occassions, be it birthdays, christmas, uuummm any other special occassions you can think of...

My husband and I were talking about this yesterday. Since I am the only vegetarian in the family, we are trying to handle the holiday meals. And I've only been veggie for a few weeks. Especially the ham or turkey his mother will cook for christmas. We usually don't go there for Thanksgiving. But Christmas and Easter will be big ones. MIL usually does most of the cooking and we bring a side dish. SIL will also bring a side dish. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated. Another problem is if Easter falls during Passover. Then we have to be careful that what we bring is also Kosher. (Yeah right, like the Easter ham is Kosher.) They eat the ham but expect the rest of the meal to fit their food guidelines during Passover. (Weird family I know, christian parents, jewish daughter, pagan son.)

Personally, the turkey has never been the most important bit of the meal for me. So, what I did last time I was veggie, and what I'm planning on doing this year, is sitting down to a Yorkshire pudding the size of a plate (for really special occasions like this I use cake tins), filled with roasted root vegetables, brussel sprouts with chestnuts, stuffing, red cabbage, overpriced imported green beans, etc, etc.
Healthy? No. But incredibly tasty.

We usually go to the family's meals, since our place is too small to have guests. Since I am the only veggie, I usually have whatever is there, minus the meat, and since it is a huge meal, there is always lots to choose from.

That's part of the problem. While most people make these hugh quanitities of food for holidays, my MIL barely makes enough to go around. The only leftovers are from the bird and then there's only about enough for the next day. She just doesn't like leftovers. (Gee and I wonder why DH won't ever eat leftovers?) I think I'll have to take two or three dishes to make sure there are plenty of veggie options. Everyone likes my scalloped corn so I'll probably take that and something else.

This has been weighing on my mind. We are all vegetarian but will have a houseful of guests that are 'meats' as my daughters call them. I need some good ideas to start practicing. I want to fill people's eyes and stomachs.
