Holy cow! Diaper overload!!!!

So I took a break from studying (ahem...and MDC-ing
) to get my diapers in order. It is insane.

I have not bought a single thing new. One batch I bought from a mama bc she needed some money. One batch an MDC mamadonated to me bc of our brokeness. Some MIL bought. Some my mom found in her basement (my mom is the neighborhood used-clothes lady in her community).

I have:
6 kissaluvs 0's
12 kissaluvs 1's
3 kissaluvs contours med/lrg (and more on the way)
6 preemie prefolds
12 infant prefolds
18 premium prefolds
2 small wool wraps
2 small prowraps
2 small bsww
3 med prowraps
3 med bsww
5 sm pocket dipes
4 medium GMAR prefitteds
2 small GMAR prefitteds

Then it gets confusing:
11 assorted pull-on plastic/vinyl covers--ranging in sizes and quality from bummis to dappi to gerber and tiny to medium-ish
21 assorted fitteds and AIO's ranging from tiny to huge with millions of soakers and doublers. I can't tell even whihc ones are necessarily fitteds and which are AIO's
3 kooshies AIO's--I have no idea what size these are supposed to fit
1 stacinator fleece cover in nb--I think
3 longies--one fleece, one knit, and one *I think* wool fabric. All big-ish, I think
2 soakers from recycled sweaters
6 soakers knit and crocheted--one seems more acrylic than wool (?), the rest are wool. Two in particular are beyond beautiful. Assorted size. Mostly biggish. Not sure what sizes they will fit.
1 medium pocket dipe that seems to have a wool outer layer (???)
2 big pockets
5 or 6 assorted flats from my mom
3 or 4 weird prefolds with messed up embroidery on them (also from my mom's basement stash)
1 gorgeous embroidered muttaquin wool cover and OV fitted set in I think medium.

I think I have enough....I think at this point I have more than enough, but I'm not sure how some of the fitteds and things will work out. Many are much bigger and some are quite worn. Some are hemp and seem very erm, hard if that makes sense. Don't know if there's any way to make them feel soft again.

But I don't know how to sort these out. I don't know what sizes are which or what will fit. I almost feel bad bc some were given to me and now tha tI look at everything it seems like I almost have too much. I don't have wool-wash supplies and don't know what to buy or how to use it.

I started to wash them as I acquired them but fell behind. Obviously none of the wool has been washed. As soon as the prefold/contour load I've got in now is done, I'm gonna do the fitteds/AIO's, but I'm nervous about launderign the AIO's too harshly and ruining the linings. This is complicated by not knowing which ones are AIO's. And I don't have a clue what to do with the stuff from my mom. I guess the flats will come in handy, but I have so many beautiful things from the TP and other places that I don't think I need to keep around a couple of weird gerber prefolds with messy embroidery, but I hate to throw stuff out.

Oh, and DH's grandmother allegedly purchased 4 dozen Gerber flats for us. I can hardly wait til those arrive...

so that's my stash. I've overwhelmed.

Sounds wonderful! It is great to have so much variety because some diapers will be grown out of quickly, and some just won't work for you. How lucky that you didn't even have to buy anything!
Wow! IF you're interested in selling any of those prowraps, you just let me know!
Do we have the same mother?!

I'm pretty overwhelmed with my stash because of my mother, too... I think she started collecting CDs from garage sales and rummage sales before my sister had her DD (and she's 4!) and my sister wasn't interested in CDing at all. So, she sent me about 2 dozen prefolds, 1-2 dozen flats (I think that's what they are - they kinda look like cheesecloth and not very absorbent?!), some flat contoured pads that may be useful for stuffing AIOs or as a liner for a prefold, about 8 waterproof wraps (mostly prorap). Probably enough for a stash if I didn't already HAVE one!
Guess it will be helpful in emergencies and as cleaning rags (and sedentary dust collectors?!). And she can't even play ignorant, since she bought me 90% of (or at least things that I could exchange for) my regular stash: 28 kissaluv 0s, 9 waterproof wraps in NB or small size, 6 small Fuzzibunz, 25 medium FuzziBunz, and about 40 FB inserts small or regular... eek!

That's the kind of stash I was trying to build! With all the variety in styles and fits, you can easily figure out exactly what works and what doesn't. Imagine spending $$$$ on 1-2 types of dipes and hating them or having a babe with chicken legs and all the dipes only fit chubby legs (or vice-versa) !
Flippin' A that's a lot of dipes!
And so many different kinds. My stash doesn't even come close!

It just kinda' happened
:

I started buying a few things used...then I gave my MIL my MDC log-in and a crash course in what's good and what's likely not and what's way too hyena to aspire to, and she bought some things.

Before MIL gave me all the things she'd bought I was still in panic mode bc DH had lost his job and so I started trolling the FFS postings. One mama sent me a huge package with tons of nice stuff in it.

And then there's my mom's strange contributions.

And yesterday, before I tallied everything up and realized how much I have, I arranged to get 17 more kissaluvs contours! (I love them...so far. Lots of people have warned me they arent' very effective though. So soft and simple and nice though!)

I figure we're set for dipes for a while now...

But, can I dry the pocket dipes? They've been in the washer overnight and I have to decide what to do! And the AIO's?

Oh, wow. That's a lot. We didn't CD last time but I'm giving it a shot this time and I'm trying to get the lingo down from the Diapering board, but that board moves fast and I'm frankly a little intimidated. And it seems like no one can really give you advice because it's all about what works for your baby and your budget/lifestyle. I bought some Niji covers and hemp/cotton dipes from a woman in my neighborhood, though people have told me they're very expensive (I got them 1/2 price, but even then they were spendy).

I'm going to a workshop/diaper circle here in a few weeks so I'm hoping to find out more there. I'm just reluctant to spend too much on anything and then find out it doesn't fit my baby...but then I don't want to be washing diapers three times a day, either!

KWYM about the diapering board. I feel like yelling "JUST TELL ME WHAT TO DO ALREADY!!!!!!"

And don't tell me about it all depends on the baby! I'm not doing this again for the second and third one! I need universality here!

And I'm not going out and ordering all my dipes the day after the baby is born and I've figured out her body size/shape.

Hrm, too bad CD-ers are into U/S as much as a general rule. I can just see someone marketing dipe-sizing ultrasounds. Tell you how fat your kid's thighs are are 36 weeks!

^^^you were asking about drying pockets and AIO's...

I usually line dry them but will sometimes throw them in the dryer...It is supossed to be good for the PUL to go in the dryer on occasion...

I hope that helps

Thanks! I pretty much have to put them in the dryer this time bc I don't have a clothesline set up up. I used to use just a rack but it's too small for a load of dipes and I'm not allowed to hang stuff outside. We're gonna install a clothesline in our spare room but havent' gotten to it yet.

Hrm, gotta add that to my list of things to do before the baby is born...

Okay, since this is a "safe place"
and I'm not likely to irritate any hard-core CDers, what is "hyena?" I thought it had something to do with the trading post...

Wow.. Im freaking out about my stash and my poor little guy will be spending a few weeks in 1/2 sposies and 1/2 cloth until we are up to par with our stash LOL... Lucky you!
I found hand-me-down diapers confusing too. It will make more sense when you have the baby. Try to roughly sort them by size even if they don't have sizes marked, and put all the bigger ones in boxes. For wool, ideally use a wool wash like Eucalan Woolwash. Use a soap with lanolin to maintain waterproofness.

Personally, for newborns I prefer prefolds with simple diaper wraps - easiest to launder and newborns are easy to change. More fancy diapers are great for when they get squirmy.

And remember, that diapers are sooo overrated

See, the scariest thing about my humongous diaper stash is that we have been thinking of EC-ing. I think the final decision was to spend a month or so getting used to being parents and getting to know the baby and then moving into the EC thing more.

I kinda figured I'd need more dipes to EC successfully so that I can always change her immediately when she does wet the dipe.

And then it just got out of hand. I've been using diapers as an anxiety displacement type thing, I think. Whatever there is to worry about, I ended up worrying about not having enough diapers. It was just more fun than worrying about not having any money...

Thanks for the wool tips.

You know I totally understand that, but most parents find that ECing from birth works best. You don't have to be neurotic about it, but watching for signals and helping your baby pee/poop outside of diapers right from the beginning can actually make things easier as a new parent. A classic example is parents worrying about their babies suddenly making a huge fuss during breastfeeding. This "breastfeeding problem" is often actually a signal that the baby has to go, but if you are not ECing it's much harder to notice these things and help your baby eliminate comfortably.

Oh, definitely. ECers tend to use more dipes in the beginning.

I know...It's more that we'd like to use the time to learn her communications, figure out what's going on..y'know?

Oh, trust me, I *have* to be neurotic about it. Neurotic is what I do best

My onyl reason to consider not EC-ing really is that I'll get all upset and neurotic about it, kwim?

Yeah, we're thinking of trying a few gradual little things...nursing nekkid and try peeing onto a prefold rather than into one, things like that. Slinging with just a prefold loosely wrapped. We'll see. I havent' been around babies in a long time and I've got a lot to relearn pretty quickly. I am not going to stress over yet another new skill right away. And trust me, I would stress about it.

Perhaps it's setting ourselves up for failure, but I'm really not concerned with success or failure, just trying to keep things clean and comfortable and happy.

Well, what we did was basically just offer ds an opportunity to "go" regularly. If his diaper already needed changing it was just part of the changing ritual. If his diaper was clean and dry and he had a pee or poop in the potty place it was awesome because it meant that we saved washing a diaper. Before you try it it's hard to imagine it just becoming an ordinary routine, but I'm sure you'll click right into it when you're ready.
IIRC "Hyena" referred to the Mama's behavior towards the dipe. At a popular stocking they would circle around a diaper like a bunch of hyenas.

I think that it's really hard to give diapering advice. I LOVE wool, but have friends who are very much like me in other ways, but hate it. I LOVE pockets, but my faves are wonderoos, when most people prefer fuzzibunz, and I won't keep PUL on my babies for too long and hardly at all during summer. IMO, fitteds are *best*, while prefolds are more versatile. I started out with cheap and homemade and worked my way up to nice but not hyena level dipes. Some people prefer simplicity.

Some people get way too into it
: ...I have a winter stash (fitteds, wool, pockets and AIO's) and a summer stash (75% prefolds and flats usually worn without a cover and line dried).

And we all want to recruit. No one wants to give advice then find it was that very advice that turned you away from CDing.
FWIW I think that if you can find a thrifty variety stash like you have, that's the perfect way to start. AND CDing, it crystalizes the minute you put a dipe on your babe...all the lingo, the late nights researching diapering systems and begging for information...it's like in one little minute it ALL makes sense. You really have to touch and see I think. Maybe the best advice is to find someone IRL to give you a diaper tour.
