I have been very apprehensive at the thought of using a home doppler because I was so scared that I wouldn't be able to find the heartbeat and that it would stress me out. Well, a friend has one that she is letting us use and we were just messing around with it. We finally found what I think was the baby but the heart rate kept fluctuating between 104 and 140. I am freaked out because 104 is way to low, right? Is the rate fluctuation normal. Should I be nervous or am I overreacting? I am starting to think my first impression of the dopplers was correct and that maybe it isn't going to give me the calm reassurance that I was hoping for. Thoughts? Thanks!

I would say likely the 104 is either picking up your heartrate and not dropping enough to give you a correct reading... or is just not catching all the beats.

Using a doppler yourself you have to understand it is just a machine... it cannot always tell the difference between a heartbeat and a stomach gurgle... or the difference between your heartbeat and babys... or even realize that it is not catching every heartbeat.

Dont worry about the rate. The fact that you found the heartbeat is all you need.

Baby's heart rate is slightly variable. My guess is like Mae's, you found yours. The baby's heartbeat will sound quite a bit different than yours, too... I know I can tell when I've found my own because I can actually feel/hear my pulse going at the same time.

I don't bother looking at the heart rate the the doppler tells me. It fluctuates a lot and sometimes doesn't seem to be registering the heartbeat that I'm hearing. When I want to know the heart rate, I just count the beats I hear in 15 seconds and multiply by 4. It's normal for it to fluctuate some but if you're concerned about it fluctuating a lot, just count it yourself a few times and see what you get. I bet the baby is just fine!

Thanks ladies!

I tried again the next day and couldn't find it (freak out!) then called dh in and the little one decided to make an apprearance - I guess this baby is daddy's little one already . It was definetly baby and the rate stayed the same (around 150). But, I am going to take everyone's advice and not watch and just listen.
