If I disconnect our home phone, will 911 still work? We have cell phones and plenty of minutes so I hate paying $30 a month for a home phone (that's with no features) but we really feel we should have one in case of an emergency. I've heard conflicting things so I thought maybe someone on here would know. FWIW, we have Qwest. Thanks!

I'm pretty sure you can get phone service for like $7 a month, you just won't have unlimited calling, it would be charged my the min. I don't have a home phone at all.

If you dont have phone service then you dont have access to the wires.. so no 911 wont work.
You should call qwest and see if they have a 911 only option

Thanks everyone for your responses!

I just wanted to update with what I found out when I called Qwest. It seems they have what's called a "Metered Service" plan. Funny they don't advertise it Here in Oregon it's $6.79 a month (plus taxes). That gets you unlimited incoming calls and outgoing calls are $.04 a minute. We don't ever call out on our home phone but it allows us to keep the number and allows us to have 911 service (never worried about this until we had DS). A much better option than the $30-$35 a month they were charging me for basic phone service (no features) with long distance capabilities.

I'm so happy about this! We are losing about 25% of our income in June and even the little things help these days

I've actually heard from numerous sources that you do NOT have to have phone service to be able to call 911 from a landline.

I've heard this as well. I've also heard that old cell phones will still call 911 even if you have canceled your plan. Need to verify this.

I had my regular Verizon land line cut off a few months ago, when in a fit of insanity I wanted to switch to Earthlink's TruVoice. Earthlink had Verizon shut off before they'd even shipped the part I needed to get the TruVoice. I got such bad customer "service" and such a bad vibe from them that I switched back to Verizon, but it was two more weeks before they were allowed to hook me back up.

During that time I got nothing at all. If I picked up the phone it was dead silence and didn't dial. So, I'm sure 911 wouldn't have worked without phone service.

Even if you don't have a dialtone, 911 should still work. It does in the area where I grew up (I didn't know about it until one of my sister's friends -- a police officer -- told me.)

Also, if you qualify for any assistance at all (depends on your state) you can use the Lifeline assistance form. We get our home phone for just 5.13$ a month (including taxes and everything). Here's a Link

In some places I've lived, you don't need phone service to have access to 911. You should check with the phone company in your area.

Alternatively you could get a cell phone without a plan. Those have 911 enabled. (I donate my old ones to DV shelters for that reason)

ETA: The downside of the cellphone is the address won't come up automatically.
