Hello Ladies!

As Home Schoolers are you required to VAX in Canada?

Or does this vary according to the province, if so, please tell me what is it like in your province?
Please provide as many details as possible.
Are school children required to get vaxed & Homeschoolers not?
Or how does it work...

Is the Swine Flu VAX required across the board? Regardless of where you are.
Sorry, for my ignorance on the subject

Thanks in advance for your help.

I can't provide all the information you're looking for, but I'll do what I can!

We're not *required* to vax, as home or bricks and mortar schoolers. Most provinces have rules that allow exclusion of unvaccinated children from schools during times of 'outbreaks' - which can and has been interpreted to mean everything from a couple of incidences on up.

A few provinces do require that parents submit paperwork stating that they are refusing to vaccinate, but I don't know anything about this. I *think* that New Brunswick and Ontario do this, but I'm not sure.

I don't have a kid in the public schools, but the swine flu vaccine wouldn't have had a law of its own. So I imagine that schools had the right to exclude unvaccinated children at the height of the outbreak.

I've never tried to register a child for a brick and mortar school, so I'm not sure what vaccination paperwork is required. I have registered my 6 year old (AB monitors but also provides $) as a homeschooler and there was not a single question asked about vaccination.

Here, the vaccinations are administered by the public health unit, not the doctor's office. So the parent is responsible for calling to arrange it. If a child is known to teh system (ie born at the hospital, etc) then a vaccination reminder card will be sent periodically but no one follows up with it. Even my doctor doesn't tend to ask about vaccinations, assuming that I've been taking the kids to the health unit.

Nobody here is required to vaccinate. However, if your child is in school you likely have to fill out some paperwork or explain yourself to someone. Still, they can't *make* you do it.

As homeschoolers the issue has never come up for us, period.
it's never been an issue for me either. swine flu vax was completely voluntary, i think it was about 30% of albertans ended up getting it in the end.
Great replies!

Thank you for your help!
Did you see a lot of swine flu cases in your respective town, cities?

i'm not sure of the rates ... i think it was slightly higher than a normal flu season.
re: your original question. I have a son in public school, a homeschooling daughter, and a son in preschool. Aside from notices that swine flu vax clinics were happening in various places, I never heard a word about the swine flu vax outside of the media and MDC. It certainly wasn't required of my kids.

A friend of my oldest son was diagnosed with H1N1 in...November, I think. She was hospitalized for dehydration and received quite a few units of IV fluids. Her diagnosis was confirmed by blood tests, which many, many diagnoses were not. My entire family was sick shortly afterwards, and I suspect it was H1N1, but none of us were ever tested or anything.

I have no idea how many cases there were, as many people probably had it and never even saw a doctor. I can't remember the official counts, but they weren't very high, to be best of my recollection.

I was a kindergarten teacher in Alberta for the public school system until 2008. I don't recall anybody ever needing any documentation about vaccines from students (nor do I remember ever having to have any while I was in school myself in either public or catholic schools). While I was teaching, our school hosted seasonal flu vaccines and I never felt any pressure to get one myself. I have never been asked about my vaccination status as a teacher, either.

I don't have very many vaccines (probably mostly because of being born in the 70s), and I do remember my catholic school in junior high having a clinic for MMR shots which I did not get at that time, because my mother refused. She was ahead of her times back then. I did end up getting the shot on my own at a later date because I thought it was important after all the propaganda they fed us.

As a pregnant woman who currently works with adults with disabilities I have felt a lot more pressure to get the swine flu vaccine than I have ever felt about any vaccine before, but I have no problem sharing my opinion
with people who feel they have to bug me about my choices.

In Ontario students in public school just have to sign a waiver if they are not vaxing. I am a teacher and no one has asked about my vax status nor H1N1. There has been no pressure to vax myself or my children. My dr's office keeps asking if we are vaxing but there is no real pressure to do it.
