I'm posting this here as we are not a homeschooling family currently and are considering it only for 1yr (at this point, anyway)

We would like to live abroad for 1yr and homeschool our children who are 4 and 7. When we return they will be entering 1st and 4th grade, respectively, back at their current school.

Based on chatting with other parents and reading about homeschooling families who have transitioned back to school, I imagine our children would be able to leave for 1yr and come back without issue. I will of course discuss this with the administration before making a final decision.

I am wondering if anyone here has done this and would be willing to share their experience. I would love to hear about what it was like to discuss this with your children, to transition away after the school year, to homeschool abroad, to transition back the following year. Anything you have to share

We've lived out of the country and homeschooled, though when we returned to the states we continued to homeschool.

While living over seas, you will need to follow the laws for the country you are living in, unless you are military. Homeschooling isn't legal everywhere -- in some countries it is a jailable offense. Do your research.

Depending on where you are going, you may not have an English library. I'd check out Sonlight Curriculum, if I were you. It is one of the few that is truly set up to be used out of the US.

I'd also post on the homeschool board

Thank you. I will post on the homeschooling forum. Homeschooling is legal where we will be living. Also, since we would be there for one year or less, I think of it as an extended vacation and would not expect to report to anyone re schooling. Perhaps I am wrong on this?
We are also now considering homeschooling when we return to the US.

My advise would be to follow the laws of both where you consider home and where you are living, if at all possible.

Where are you going?

Wouldn't attending a local school, if thats possible. Not be part of the whole experience of being abroad for a year. It would mean a whole set of friends for the children and you. Plus they could pick up some other language maybe.
I know Ds went to the local school when I was in Europe for a year, he loved it and now at age 20 is still friendly with a couple of the kids he was in school with. He went back the summer of his junior year in high school and I hardly saw him, he was off with his friends.

we have lived abroad for years. I recommend not stressing...plan to hs and see if you can find other hsers where you will be living for info. When I lived in the MIddle East, none of us even knew the laws. We knew there was compulsory schooling but werent sure about compulsory attendance. We are now in Germany and my kids are in school, but I expect we could have gotten away with it for about 2 years before any issues. What other countries is homeschooling illegal in?? Ive never herd of anywhere as strict as Germany!
One of the benefits of hsing abroad is your schedule is youw own! ANd at 4 and 7 you can have so much fun and freedom. You'll meet locals at parks etc. Just dont be shy about being the initiator of conversations. Now while my children have met some friends here in school and are learning German...they are also getting all the "stuff" that makes me crazy about school including some cranky teachers and bullying. Try yahoos groups-AP ExPat homeschool . Go for it
