Are there any good homebirthing midwifes in Detroit? My cousin is pregnant and new to Detroit. She'd like to plan a homebirth. would love to hear about the midwifes and homebirthing climate there. Thanks so much!
There are great homebirth midwives in the Detroit area. Does she live in the city or suburbs? Most midwives in the area will travel about 1 hour away from their home base for homebirths. There are a couple of suburban Detroit practices I am aware of, 4 practices in Ann Arbor which are all pretty great (and might cover the part of Detroit where she lives).

I think we have a nice homebirth community here. Good luck to her!
Hi, thanks for your reply! I believe she's in the city (I will double check on her exact location). Would you be able to supply me with any names/numbers or refer me to a good website or other such resource for this? Thanks!
One place to start looking is at birthnetwork.org. That is a local birth advocacy/consumer organization. They have meetings close to Detroit where they have "meet the provider" chats before the start of the proper meeting. I, by coincidence, happen to be speaking at the Macomb Co. Birthnetwork meeting on Oct. 1 on the topic of Dads and Doulas, though I have not attended the meetings of that chapter before.

Homebirth midwives are listed in the phone book in Detroit as well, under Midwives, Lay.

The two midwives on the birthnetwork list that I have the most familiarity with are Merilynne Rush (who works for New Moon Midwifery) in Ann Arbor and Sierra Hillebrand (who works for Trillium Birth Services) in Ann Arbor. Both are excellent midwives. New Moon was the midwifery service that I used for my first baby. I apprentice with Trillium currently and have seen them do some very good things.

Ann Arbor is about an hour from Detroit proper, so prenatals may be a bit inconvenient, but many people from Detroit and its close-in suburbs have chosen those two practices over others close to them so I wouldn't rule them out.

There is one nurse-midwife I know of, Linda Johnson, who covers that area and also has a birth center in Lambertville, MI, down on the MI-OH border. She also would be a haul for prenatals, but as a CNM might be a less expensive option, depending on insurance. I believe that she is also on the birthnetwork list.

Linda Honey has a great reputation and is on the Birthnetworks list for mother friendly midwives. i know she does home births in detroit area a family friend has used her for all 3 of her births and another friend who is in Livonia used her for her last 2.
I used Linda Johnson when she practiced in Taylor out of a birthing center. She was alifesaver for me. I really liked her.
There are several homebirth midwives in the Detroit area. I am using Charlotte Sanchez and I absolutely LOVE her. I know about 40 people who have delivered with her and all of them loved her as well. She is in Taylor but working on getting an office in the Royal Oak area.

I do know of many others but as I read ahead all the other posts pretty much named them all

I also second birthNetwork !!! I attend the Macomb County meetings. I missed the Oct 1st one but have attended all of the others since it started.

Definitely refer to www.birthnetwork.org. Their newest provider guide should be up on their site soon and print versions will also be out soon.

Bridgett Ciupka (pron. chip-ka) and her apprentice, Kelly Ford, attended my daughter's birth in January. They have The Birth Place in Taylor, MI. See www.thebirthplace.com. Their site's a little out-dated but their contact info is current. I highly recommend them!

Linda Johnson and Bridgett Ciupka delivered my first son when she was practicing at the Birth Place in Taylor.
Bridgett(Ciupka) and Kelly Ford delivered my second in July.
Bridgett is an amazing woman. They do both homebirths and birth center births. Kelly is an awesome addition to the center and she and Bridgett work wonderfully.

***When I had the flu during my pregnancy, Bridgett came with me to the emergency room to act as an advocate(when I didn't want antibiotics administered)and sat with DH and I for 4 hours while I was rehydrated.
I agree, Charlotte Sanchez is a wonderful mid-wife working around Southeastern Michigan. She is very warm and caring, and willing to help any woman transition into motherhood.

Please email her at [email protected] for additional information.
Yeppers I love her! She is such a comfort and a wonderful caring person. She just loves to see mamas happy and well cared for.

A+ in my book!!!

I can't wait to have her at my birth in January!!!

She has been with about 40 people I know and everyone just loves her to pieces. I have never heard a negative thing about her.
For my homebirth in March, I have hired Eileen Denomme. She is in Romeo (north Macomb county). This will be my first birth experience with her, but so far I love her. I also talked to 4 or 5 other women that had homebirth experiences with her, and every one of them absolutely raved about her.

The CNM that caught my first two babies is now working at Hutzel hospital in Detroit proper (my kids were born at McLaren in Flint, MI). I know she can't attend homebirths, but I would definitley recommend her. I had 2 very awesome hospital birth experiences with her (Debbie Wagner). She's also listed in the birthnetwork directory.
I know Eileen Denomme rather well. She is much closer to me than Charlotte but her and I don't really mesh like Charlotte and I do. I have also known Charlotte for quite a long time. She has always been there for me. I went through 3 years of infertility and she remained close to me and helped me through that time. I couldn't imagine anyone else being there to help me with the birth of this baby

I see Eileen all the time at birthNetwork. I hear she is wonderful in a birth setting.
