Has anyone had a homebirth in Fairbanks? DH and I are TTC#3 and really want to have a homebirth this time. I've heard the midwives at the birth center here do homebirths, but I've never actually met anyone in person who's had one. Would appreciate any info you can provide.

Also would love to get to know some other likeminded people. It's frustrating feeling like the freak in the family sometimes (all my sisters-in-law have had epidurals or c-sections and can't understand why I wouldn't want pain medication, let alone be crazy enough to put my child in danger by birthing at home). At least my husband is supportive - homebirth was actually his idea first.

Thanks,
Amanda, mom to Juliet (3) and Eyob (3).

Hi! I had my homebirth in Oklahoma before I moved here but this is a very home birthing friendly town. I'm a doula so have met the midwives here. They are all very nice. You should give them a call and ask to set up a meeting.

That's awesome that you are going to have a homebirth!
If I ever have another baby, than I will have a homebirth. Have you heard of The Natural Wisdom Project. A goal of the Project's is to a. connect like minded families and b. support all natural births; whether they be at home, or birth center or hospital. among other things. It might be something of interest to you. To contact them, call 456-1437. I know many people through the project who have had homebirths.

I've had two birth center births here (w/ the midwives) and two homebirths. I ADORE the midwives and love homebirthing.

What else do you want to know? I had one bc birth on a bed, one on the floor leaning over the bed, holding my hubby. I had one homebirth in our hot tub, in October, with the snow falling, and one in November in our shower on a birth stool. I catch all my own babies even though the midwives are there. They're AWESOME about respecting your wishes about those types of things. In fact, my hubby and I BOTH caught our last baby together, it's a long story about how funny it was, but the midwife (Dana, who has been there for many of my births), made sure to back up and let hubby near me so he could catch.

Homebirth rocks. And you are in GREAT hands in Fairbanks w/ the DEMs.

Whereabouts do you live? I'm in the Goldstream Valley.

Hey you Fairbanks gals, we should get together for lunch sometime. When would be a good time for everyone? Right now Fridays are best for me because I only work 4 days a week. Where would be a good place?

Fridays can work for me. We usually do piano lessons on Fridays, but that can be switched around.

Are we bringing the kids? I'm presuming we are. Ivory Jack's (out here in the valley) has a pretty lenient attitude toward kids runnin' around, and lunch is usally quiet and low-volume.

Near there (right next to there) is the Goldstream Lions Park, so we could have lunch and then go play, or we could just meet at a park for lunch in the first place.

Thanks for all the great info. I'm so excited about this birth, and I'm not even pregnant yet! I've been wanting to call the birth center for a long time now, but I guess I'm superstitious. I don't want to actually contact them until I get those two little lines on the test.

It's great to know there are others in town who believe in natural healthy births and natural child-rearing. I swear my husband's family thinks our kids are all so deprived because we don't buy them all the Disney/Dora/Sponge-bob crap, don't let them wear clothes that turn them into walking billboards for that same crap, and dont' let them eat the nutritionally void foods associated with that same crap. What? Your kids have never had Chicken McNuggets? You're denying them an essential American childhood! It drives me crazy. I almost can't stand it when they visit their cousins because it's hard to keep the same rules for my kids without seeming like I'm judging everyone else's parenting styles.

Anyway, glad to get to know all of you, and thanks for the info. I'm sure I'll have lots more questions, especially if I get that positive pregnancy test!

OT:

Hi Amanda! - We met, recently, at Trish's house. My Bonnie is scared of dogs, and my dh has long red hair (D'ya remember? No worries if you don't). Nice to "see" you here.

Do you know Nicole? (Has two kids - a 2 yo named Cedar and a newborn girl?) She had a hb in Fbx, too. Has nothing but good words to say about it.

Of course I remember you! We were the only ones who hung out in the big tent the whole time because that's the only place the dogs couldn't get into.

I don't know Nicole, though I'd love to talk to anybody who's had a homebirth up here. Maybe once I'm actually pregnant, I'll have you pass along my email to her. Would that be ok?

Thanks for responding. By the way, Bonnie is a cutie!

wow! so many alaskans here! I am usually the only one.

I live off Chena Pump Road but was in the valley on Sunny Slope for a few years

I too would LOVE a homebirth but I cannot cause I am a VBACer and cannot find a CNM to take me on as a patient. I am so sad now. But on a mission.
I am going to become a CNM myself so I can help others like me to birth they way they want to!

Nice to meet you all.

FBKS certainly needs more birth options. I get so angy when I think about how pg women are treated by the medical establishment.

I narrowly escaped a typical FTP intervention related c-sect with my first dd and the trauma of the birth has taken me years to heal from. I'm just now at the point that I can let go of my anger and guilt and count my blessings that last half hour of fast dialation and the hard lessons that I learned about trust, intuition, and research.

Just had a homebirth in June...it was wonderful and I will defentlly do it again. My midwife is a solo pratitioner who only does HB, she also comes to your home for all prenatals and post partum (including the last pap), if you want her contact info send me a message. I love all the midwives at the Clinic in town, dont get me wrong but its nice to have more coices incase your personalities clash or you looking for a defferent style of care.

good luck and best wishes,

Riki
