So this time, we are planning a home birth. With dd, I went to the DR at 6 weeks, because I was bleeding. So I confirmed my pregnancy at the ER...not fun. Everything turned out ok though. So with this one, I am definately taking a more relaxed approach. So I know I am pregnant, not sure exactly how far along, but can sorta figure it out. WHen do I need to see a midwife? I mean, they can't do much but the dopplar until 20 weeks when you (if you want) get an u/s, right? Am I missing something?

Yeah, make sure you get the midwife you want now! My midwife (also happyfrog's midwife
) does the doppler if you want at 12 weeks. She also checks your urine and iron, which I think is important, especially for me, since I'm so sick all the time. And she spends lots of time going over payments schedules, homebirth procedures, ect, and also just likes to get to know you. She also keeps of stock of nifty herbs that might help the unpleasant symptoms or she'll direct you to what to try. And loans you reading material and DVD's. It's not necessary to go, but I think the more time you spend with the midwife, the more comfortable you'll be, and our's charges a flat rate no matter how many prenatal visits you have.

HTH!

I would definitely call to let her know ASAP and set up an appt for anywhere from 9-12 weeks. Some like it sooner, some don't. Mine thought prior to 11 to 12 weeks wasn't necessary, but we could get together just to chat.
As said by others, most can detect hb by 12 weeks (couldn't find mine as late as 13w, and finally got it at 16!), and there's no way for them to do much before then.

I just enjoyed getting a chance to talk with her, get paperwork stuff out of the way, etc., etc., so those first few visits do go to good use.

Congrats!!

I agree! Try to see her as soon as you can. I wish we had been able to see ours before 20 some weeks. We ended up having to scrounge money and have only seen her a few times. It's good to spend time with her knowing that birth isn't imminent that's for sure.
