I don't know if anyone else has posted anything like this, but...
For all those mama's having a homebirth...
What are you using all those towels for? My mw said she was bringing the kit, and I'm sorry to say I haven't given too much thought as to what I need to get, myself. I figured I'd need some pads and chux for after (trying to think of what I used at the hospital with dd that I won't have here, but need). Help me construct a list!!

That sounds like about it, Karen.

During dd's birth, we used towels for getting in and out of the tub, and after the birth laid a path of towels between the tub and the shower so I didn't bleed all over the floor. So you want old towels, though our doula put ours in the washer right away, and the blood came out just fine.

My MW brings all of the sterile items. We're supplying a box of gloves (which will be useful later, too), alcohol, witch hazel, hydrogen peroxide (for cleaning up), iodine, chux pads (tho MW will bring those this time - yay for Freecycle and a CASE that my other HBing friend picked up!), after birth pads, towels, blankets, bed cover, paper towels... I think that's about it. She did ask for a bulb syringe as her supplier has been iffy on those, but I don't really want to do suctioning, so we may skip it altogether! Oh, we also had a heating pad, digital thermometer, and crock pot last time. And I've ordered peri bottles for me and ice packs, too.

My friend just had a hb and she said on top of all the supplies, she said a ZILLION towels are really necessary. She said enough towels to absorb about 12532 gallons of water should be enough.

Where do you guys get all of this stuff? Do you order it online or is there a store I can get it at? I'm meeting with mw next Friday, so I'll ask her specifically what I need to get. She did make it seem that she's bringing the "big guns", but maybe I'm just being naive (or hopeful!!)

Thanks for everything!!

Most midwives have a birth kit package from a supply company. Cascade Supply, or In His Hands, or Birth With Love, or some other places like that. You can always email your midwife and ask her.

I'm buying mine TODAY because dh just got paid

My midwife had a prepacked birth kit that I ordered from Cascade. It has the more medical stuff in it, peri bottle, chux, gloves, nose sucker, umbilical clamp......

I also got a list from her of stuff I need to pick up at the drug or grocery store, olive oil, betadine....

And stuff to have at home in an easily accessible place, like towels, receiving blankets, a hand mirror, flashlight....

Towels...lots are good! Birth can be messy (as my MW say).

Everything on my list can be bought in a regular store or at the mw's. I need to get on that. They like everything to be there for the homevisit...mine is on 9/18...yikes!!!

huh, you get a home visit before labor? that sounds like a good idea - but i don't think my midwives do that....

my list requests 24 chux pads, i asked if i really needed that many and i got a wide-eyed stare and nod yes. I asked if my kajillions of rags and towels would be an okay substitute and they said it would be up to me. It was all for 'mess control'.

I know how messy my 1st was - my second was clean as could be - all contained in a bathtub. I'm hoping to have another 'clean' birth in the tub of water this time around too!

Here's what's on my list from my MWs:

1 Sani Pads pkg/12
1 Peri Irrigation Bottle
12 Gauze 4x4 pkg/2
2 straws
1 Sanitary Brief
1 Bulb syringe 3 oz economy
1 Lube Jelly 4 oz bottle
2 clamps - plastic, sterile
I ordered some things from In His Hands a day or two ago - and it showed up TODAY!! So now I have some new ice packs, peri bottles, mesh undies, and nipple shields (which have been a lifesaver for me in those first couple of weeks!). Just cannot believe how fast it came! (We are in the same state, tho.)
