We will be starting our little girl on cereal later this week. I have the Super Baby Foods book and would like to make my own. However she uses water to make the brown rice cereal. Has anyone used breastmilk to make it? If I was buying store bought cereal I would be mixing breastmilk with it, so how do I make my own cereal and use breastmilk in it? Thanks!

How old is your DD?

We tried cereal but DS hated it (not that I blame him). We just waited and gave him veggies when he was ready. If you are going to give her cereal I would mix it with breastmilk.

DD is 6 months old. in the super baby foods book the recipe calls for you to simmer the water/cereal mixture for 20 minutes and i'm not sure that is good for the milk. maybe i'll make it and see how thick it is and then i can just thin it down with breastmilk?

That's what I did - cooked it with water, then added breastmilk, as I believe heating the milk damages some of it's beneficial properties.

Then again, DS hates cereal, so after two attempts we dropped it.

I'd skip it too. I think it tastes icky, anyways... LOL!

I've heard that it is common that breastfed babies don't like rice cereal - because they are used to tasting everything mum eats through the milk, and rice cereal doesn't taste much at all (like formula?). Anyways, rice cereal has very little nutrition, so it might be better to start your baby on fruit and vegetables.

DD preferred to feed herself, so we do Baby Led Weaning. We started, at 6 months, with a whole cooked carrot, a half banana and then potato and sweet potato cut as chunky fries and baked in the oven with some oil. She loves it! Around 8 months we started letting her have chunky strips of meat, for the iron (no, she has no teeth yet, but she gums it, and the iron is in the juices anyways), on a recommendation from the Well Baby nurse.

Good luck!

Just to clarify for those who aren't familiar, the Super Baby Food book's version of cereal is actually a healthy, whole-grain version you make yourself out of oats or rice or other grains. It is a far cry from the dry "cereal" that you buy in a box from the store. The author actually calls it "super-porridge", and my kids have liked it.

My dd eats cereal, which I grind at home from whole grains. It's usually oatmeal and barley, but I think soon I'll have her try some farro, which is a pretty popular grain around here (southern Italy.) I like grinding it myself because I can regulate the texture. I actually started doing this after she started eating fruits and veggies. So she eats a combination of cereal and fruits, veggies, meat that she feeds herself.

She loves her cereal. I love cereal too! I personally feel at my best when I eat lots of whole grains, and I think grains are an important part of a healthy diet, for most people. I know there are people who disagree, and people who can't eat grains. I actually envy dd her cereal because I can't eat it for now- whole grains cause me to produce too much milk!

For the op: I agree with the pps who recommend making the cereal thick, then thin it with breastmilk.

One of the first foods DD tried at 6 months was oatmeal porridge, from my bowl (made with water, and no milk, only banana slices in it). It was very thick, and she did fine with it (as long as I let her put the spoon in her mouth herself, or she could use her fingers!).

Our little man isn't on cereal yet, I have debated on whether I would give it to him or not. I have a couple of really good recipes from Naturally Healthy First Foods for Baby. I would add milk after cooking it with water.

Right now he is really into sweet potatoes, banana, avocado. Today we tried butternut squash and he loved it. I am excited to create some good wholesome recipes for him once we get into more foods. There are so many types of cereal you can make at home and mix with good fruits and veggies.

Good luck with your first food adventures!!!
