Have any of you ever tried making your own toothpaste? Not to be overly picky, but I was wondering if it was possible with some xylitol, calcium carbonate, vegetable glycerin, maybe sodium ascorbate, then a little natural orange oil or flavoring. That way if dd swallows it, she's getting the calcium and vit. C which have to be good for her teeth and gums, plus I think that would raise the pH of her mouth the prevent decay. Anyone?

Any ideas for a preservative? Don't want it getting moldy...

I've used simple peppermint soap as toothpaste, which is pretty simple and cheap, but I'm not sure a toddler would go for that.

Well, I bought some ingredients and I'm going to go for it. I guess I'll be the test subject here. And dd

I'm going to use:
-calcium carbonate to help with cleaning (and also to act as a calcium supplement since dd will inevitable swallow it all... I bought it in powder form)
-xylitol
-sodium ascorbate (I've read you can use this like baking soda in place of toothpaster, plus it add vitamin C)
-vegetable glycerin (to hopefully dissolve the xylitol and give it a pastey consistency)
-fennel oil or clove oil or orange oil or some combination...

So I hope there isn't something that I'm missing that would cause this to not work, but I'll let you know.

"The Secret" www.saveyourteeth.com

Combine 3 parts baking soda with 1 part sea salt
Pour a little in your palm and add hydrogen peroxide to form a paste
Use a little toothbrush to apply it at the gumline

Can't promise it tastes great, though!

ETA: I thought there was something about glycerin that was bad; a lot of people try to avoid it??

is there any worry with consuming too much calcium carbonate?

Vegetable glycerin is in my toothpaste and it is edible, but I'll look into it more

Calcium carbonate is in tums and calcium chews... There is 500mg in a calcium chew and I believe about 1200mg in a teaspoon, but she wouldn't get an entire teaspoon at a brushing. Since it is an antacid, it is basic an could probably raise the pH of her stomach which I suppose could hinder digestion, but it might take more than the amount on her toothbrush.

I'll do some searches. Thanks!
