Homeschool questions

2240 Views 79 Replies 21 Participants Last post by  Epicurus
I am doing a little bit of research for a paper I am writing. Could
you all please answer two questions for me?

The questions are
1. What is a curriculum?

2. What is a textbook?

Thank you! I really appreciate your taking the time to answer these
simple questions! This is a homeschool poll so please say if you are or are not a homeschooler so I can have more accurate results

I don't get this. Do you honestly not know what a curriculum or a textbook is, or do you want our definitions as homeschoolers? And why?
I'm starting to feel like a lab rat with all these people coming here to research us.

Behold the homeschool family in its natural habitat. Notice how cleverly the mother takes on both the role of teacher and nurturer. See how stealthily she sneaks in learning at every possible opportunity...

To answer the questions...curriculum and textbooks are learning tools.

Ahhh let's look again at the mother... she's a real beaut in't she? Notice the inborn sense of nurturing as she gathers her youngsters around her for storytime.

The questions are
1. What is a curriculum?

My dd is only 2.5. Her curriculum consists of Noggin, the tv channel. "It's like preschool on tv". She wakes up at 8 and I get her a Mountain Dew and sit her in her chair, where she learns until 9. Then a quick trip to McDonalds for breakfast, then back to the learning chair. She learns until her hot dog and chips lunch. Then nap. Then more learning until Daddy comes home. Then more learning then dinner then bed. This is working very well for our family. I love homeschooling. It is really easy. I get so much done.

2. What is a textbook?
Well, I guess the TV guide.

(I am in a devilish mood...)

You totally had me going there for a minute.
I have posted here before but not for a while (you just reminded me why). I didn't know I had to qualify myself. If you don't choose to participate than don't. You don't have to be rude. I am a homeschooler and have been since the beginning with my own three children, the oldest of which is 15. I am writing an article for my local HS group newsletter. It is about homeschoolers perceptions of these two words. I would appreciate honest answers if you care to participate!
I would have preferred the input to be more pure with less explanation. I am looking for the off the top of your head opinions on what these words mean. They mean many different things to different people, believe it or not

Carry on the bashing or answering or whatever you want! It didn't seem like I was asking for very much but I do apologize if I have been inappropriate in some imperceptible to normal people way.

In my house we would call that "not really an apology".

Look, there have been several instances lately where people have come here stirring up crap under the guise of "writing a research paper." Your questions didn't make a whole lot of sense, especially when you said they were a poll. And, while I admire your committment to keeping your answers "pure," a little explanation would be helpful. It truly was difficult to ascertain if you honestly didn't know what these things were, or if you were trying to get an idea of how different homeschoolers view curriculum and textbooks. Which, when you think about, would mean that the answers would be tainted anyway by what the respondant read in the entries before.

So, yes. When you come to the homeschooling forum and ask homeschooling questions under the guise of research after several trainwreck threads where others have asked for information under the guise of research, you do have to explain your purpose a little bit. At least with us "not so normal" people.

Epicurus--
If your initial post had said all that, I'm sure you would have gotten what you wanted/needed.

There have been more than a few 'visitors' to this forum lately...and I think we are all feeling a little over-analyzed.

Especially by people who don't explain what they are looking for, kwim?

anyhow...for us?
a textbook is something we stare at when we are looking for reference guide type of info....it is fairly useless by itself, but gives us ideas of where else to go for info....
also a way to see if maybe we forgot to look at something when we got sidetracked...

curriculum is a generic be-like-everyone-else system of education. Some are more flexible than others.
Here in NY we are required to report something resembling a curriculum to the state...
it isn't something we would do, given a free reign.

(Not to say we don't plan out things....we do...we are structured homeschoolers...for the most part...)

It was not a sincere apology. I have no reason to offer a sincere apology. For what? Asking two simple questions politely

Any one of you could have simply asked me in a normal fashion. Any one of you could have looked at my profile to find out more about who I was. Or you could have simply skipped by entirely. It is not that complicated.

If any one cares to take the time I would appreciate it. If not that is OK too. No arm twisting here. Just straightforward communication.
