Hi All,
Here is the info-- it should be great and will benefit CIMS, BIRTH and HOME (see below). Tell a friend and this labor day maybe a few more people will become more educated about birth!
Love, Vanessa

BOLD Moves on Labor Day www.birthonlaborday.com
Faring Seven Souls, Caesareans, and Birth Canals

On September 1, Houston will boldly go where no play has gone before: between the legs of seven laboring women. Part of a worldwide production, BIRTH (Bringing Information & Resources to Houston) will host a special benefit performance of the critically acclaimed theatrical hit, Birth.

Created by mother and playwright Karen Brody, Birth is "as poignant and powerful as it is simple and direct," according to press notes. The story of seven women, Birth is delivered in a theatrical experience that melds the unbridled hilarity, the unexpected poignancy, and the naked truth of childbirth in America.

The culmination of 118 true stories, the cast represents the birthing spectrum from liberal, "My body rocks!"-bleating Amanda (Miranda Check) to strong-willed, no-nonsense Vanessa (Candice Bruder) to career-driven Beth (Erin Maxey), and even angry, somewhat deflated Lisa (Kimberley Traylor).

But at the cornerstone of each story lies personal choice. And Janet's (Annie Lee) epidural, Jillian's (Debbie Hull) home birth, and Sandy's (Kelly Coleman) cesarean section are all on display without judgment.

"Birth brings to light the importance of a woman's right to birth in awareness, to know her options and make informed decisions based on knowledge and what's right for her. Having an empowered birth doesn't necessarily mean having a natural birth; it means having a
birth you can 'own'," says BOLD organizer, BIRTH founder and local midwife Pat Jones.

Houston has embraced the play as part of a global Birth On Labor Day movement to make maternity care more mother-friendly. Between September 1-4, Birth will been performed in more than 20 cities around the world, including Austin, Bermuda, Malta, Maui, New York, New Delhi, and Washington, DC.

"Maternity care today simply isn't mother-friendly. In many communities pregnant mothers' voices are silenced," says playwright Karen Brody. "BOLD is a global movement to raise awareness and encourage mothers and fathers worldwide to learn the truth about childbirth and make informed birth choices. BOLD challenges women to speak out and for professionals in the maternity care field to truly listen."

Brody adds, "Can a play help improve maternity care around the world? I think so."

The performance, directed by Houston's Lynne McCabe, will be followed by a talkback session called "Mother Friendly Maternity Care: What is it and how do we get it?" featuring midwives, childbirth educators, lactation consultants, doulas, and parents.

Experience BOLD at the following performances:
September 1 -- Hogg Middle School (1100 Merrill in the Heights), 6:00p.m.
September 2 -- Arts Alliance Center Clear Lake, 11:00a.m
September 3 -- Motherhood Center, 2:00p.m.

Proceeds from a suggested donation of $10 will benefit the Coalition for Improving Maternity Services (CIMS), an international coalition that promotes a wellness model of maternity to improve birth outcomes; Bringing Information and Resources to Houston (BIRTH), a local non-profit organization that hosts an annual BIRTH Fair, outreach programs, and educational materials; and - Houston Organization Midwifery Education (HOME), which provides continuing education and peer review to its members.

Theatergoers will be able to purchase merchandise for the cause at each performance.

More information on Birth and BOLD is available at www.BirthOnLaborDay.com. or by calling BIRTH at 281-685-4965.

I was a volunteer at the first (table at the entrance) and tried to watch it-- but my son was too rambunctious to enjoy it. (he just learned how to crawl)

SOOOO-- I went to the sunday one also and loved it. Mona, I also cried sad tears (I too had a fake midwife) and got pissed off and totally excited (for my next birth, which will be a successful homebirth!). sometimes all at once.

MY BODY ROCKS : )

If you missed it, Pat said they were going to do it again on Jan 22nd....

a must see for anyone and everyone

I think she said January 20th which is a Saturday. I'm not sure what the significance of that date is. She did mentions they were looking for a larger venue because there would only be one showing.

I was glad that my sister went with me. She is newly married and they are planning a little one in the future. I really think it helped give her an idea of some of the things that women go through.

I also attended the first play and loved it! I think it was very thought provoking and am glad that viewers also received educational literature so they could do more research on their own.

I am 6 months pregnant and
My Body Rocks!! I CAN do it!!!

vanessab23, do you ming if I ask who your fake midwife was. I am planning a hospital birth with the midwives in the med center.

The hospital medwives aren't even close. RUN away. I don't know anyone who hasn't been induced that used them. I only know one woman who was with them who wasn't sectioned (all for bogus reasons)

They were not who Vanessa used- I'll let her tell her story herself.

I used the midwives in the med center. The Women's Specialist of Houston, I believe is the name of the practice. It was a mix of a bunch of OB's and something like 4 midwives. They were really nice, but not nearly hands off as I wanted. I was told that I needed to go in for an ultrasound at 41 weeks if I hadn't had the baby. I show up for the ultrasound. They tell me the baby looks great, but my fluid is really low so I need to go to the hospital right away so they can do another ultrasound using a better machine to get a better idea of how much fluid was really in there. The second ultrasound never happened. THEY decided that the baby needed to come now there was no sense waiting I was already over 40 weeks, and I was induced. I was adament about no pitocin, but they would have used it had I not gone into labor on my own after she had applied the cervical gel.

As much as I'd love to tell you
, I will refrain from doing so on this board. In her defense I know of a few women who have loved her, but my experience prenatally, during the "birth" and postpartum (during which I have suffered from PP Depresssion but never went to her for help) left SO ,uch to be desired. And I have kicked myself SO many times for not choosing the other midwives I interviews with and more importantly for not switching! I am also a midwife and perhaps my standards are just too high. Perhaps I know too much about how great prenatal care *could* be, about how many things can be tried to help a baby when he's stuck in a funny position
, and about how flippin' important postpartum care is.

Geez, sorry. I just went off
-- I guess I still have some processing to do!

Ahem. So, cookingforlove, YOUR BODY DOES ROCK! I wouldn't plan to birth in a hospital, so I can't really speak to that. How do you feel about your midwives?

Anyway, Mona, you may be right about the date. All I know is that there will actually be TWO shows. I'll get back to y'all when I find out more.

I have known of more than a few moms who have birthed with the St. Lukes midwives without induction....

Every birth is different and every pregnant mom wants/needs/desires different things. I don't think there is any perfect midwife for every mom, that is why there are so many..

Vanessa, thanks for refraining from flaming a midwife on this board. I think it's importat to remain positive. We all hope for a better experience for you next time. But thanks for allowing that midwife to remain anonymous..

Cooking4, blessings to you as you prepare for birth. I think perhaps the best way to hear other people's stories is face to face. That's why BOLD was so great, so many moms sharing from so many perspectives...

If you want info on local midwives, come to the BIRTH fair.. Oct 7.. www.houbirth.org

Peace
Karen

Well said, karen. I wouldn't want to flame her here-- especially because I haven't yet told her about how I feel. I hope to some day soon. If she reads this board, she'll know who she is, and who I am.

And yes, BIRTH Fair is going to be so great. I'll be there, so come say hello again, or introduce yourselves. And I will even have a vendor booth selling my pro-breastfeeding onesies! (this is huge for me!)

Thanks all, you are a wonderful group of mamas and I'm glad to have you all to vent to, share with, bounce ideas off.
