Ok mamas, who is planning on using cloth diapers. I know I'm not the only one! I thought it would be nice if we had a thread so we could talk. Have you guys bought any diaper stuff yet? What are you planning on using?

I'm planning on using prefolds and covers for awhile. There are a lot of different kinds I want to try though so it is hard decide what to get without spending a lot of money. I really like Rumpsters but they are so expensive I can't get too many of them. I would like to get some bumGenius, more bumkins, some wool covers and some pocket diapers. I have to get things that are easy to use so that DH will use them when he has the kids by himself. While I'm on maternity leave I don't care what I use as long it works!

We've used cloth with DS#2 since he was a newborn and LOVE them!

Plan on using them this time around too.

So far I've collected some pockets, contours and covers for NB/small -- I like to get them used from other mamas when I can. I'll also get prefolds and more covers and some more snappis. As the baby grows, I may switch to something else. And I'll have large fuzzi bunz leftover from DS when Whinnie gets to that stage.

I haven't laid a hand on a disposable diaper since December 2002, and don't plan on starting now !

DS was 4 months old then, and had been about 75% cloth / 25% disposable prior to Dec. when we made the switch to full cloth.

DD has NEVER had a disposable diaper on, and won't.

I am!

I'm using them right now, in fact, on my 14 month old. And though I ALWAYS get shunned for this on MDC, I'll admit that I use Gerber birdseye prefolds, the 12 packs that you can get at Babies-R-Us (for about $11.99), and either the vinyl Gerber pants or the nylon Dappi pants.

I don't know why so many MDC'ers object to this, but it's a system that works great for me. For one thing, the total initial investment is about 60 bucks, and then you buy some more pants as they grow/wear out. That's like another 50 bucks over the course of your child's diapering, at the most. Hang them on the line, and you've got even more money to put in the college fund.

Anyway, I think they work great, and the plastic pants never blow out on little newborn butts.

So can you tell I'm a little defensive?

I'm using cloth on my 2 yr old right now. I've only been CDing for about 2 1/2 years. Wish I switched a lot sooner!

I use mainly unbleached Indian prefolds right now, as well as Fuzzi Bunz for night time & when we're out. For the new baby, I have lots of preemie European prefolds & NB Proraps & Bummis wraps for the beginning, and unbleached Indian PF's for later with small Bummis snaps. I also have lots of small Fuzzi Bunz too. My 2 yr old can still fit intot he Mediums I have.

I also have a few fitteds & 1 AIO. Here's a link to part of my NB/S stash. I don't have pics of everything yet:

I CDd DS and this one will be too. Since I know I'm having a girl I admit I'm going a little hog wild with the adorable girly prints I've lusted after for so long.

I was going to do a swaddlebee fitted and prefold/cover system, but recently discovered that I can get a custom muttaqin newborn diaper for the same price as a swaddlebee so I'm custom ordering up a bunch of newborn mutts. I'm planning on dyeing all my prefolds (I'm so sick of the glaring white) for a little variety and I'm good on covers. I have tons of bummis SWW and proraps left over from DS. I might buy a couple super cute covers, but I'm not really pushing the issue at the moment. I have enough diaper lust just looking at the mutt choices...last thing I need to do is start looking at cute covers.

I am cd'ing I did dd...

Although I need a good recc for an AIO to give to the babysitter when this one is 3 months. I work pt and the babe will be with her for two afternoons for a few hours each afternoon...

Any recc?

I pretty much just use prefolds and wraps of some sort. I wish I could afford fuzzibunz. They seem awesome. I have a friend who uses those and I just drool at them.

I also need to get more covers. I don't have enough of those.

I'm going to use my stash I already have from previous DC. I use wow, pg brain, I cannot remember the brand. Anyway, they are fitteds and I use a different brand of washable, machine-dryable wraps. I'll post brands as I remember them.

I just need to, closer to 'due' date, get them down from our storage above the garage and wash 'em.

I love cloth diapering and am going to be so sad when it is time to let go of any remaining stash I have after the last DC is done with diapers.

I CD'd both my DDs. But I do plain old prefolds and prowrap-style covers and will do the same with this one. If I was planning on having more kids....... well then I think I could be talked into getting some beautiful custom dipes. My girlfriend makes heyena-worthy dipes and I love her work
But for now, the investment doesn't make sense for me
so I am off the hook of that addiction.

I plan to cd this baby also. Ds2 is still in his fuzzi bunz.

So far for this baby I have preemie and infant prefolds. Several Prowrap and BSWW newborn covers. 4 Kissaluv NB fitteds, 5 xs fuzzi bunz, and 2 xs VB AIOs. I have quite a few things left in size S from ds2. I need to get some girly colored dipes now though!

babybugmama- if FB are not in your budget, what about Bumkins AIOs? I had a couple of these and they were always very reliable. My dh found the velcro closers to be dummy proof, too.

we started w/ cloth when my 2.5 year old DS was about 2.5-3 weeks old, and he's been in it ever since (although he's mostly potty learned at this point, at least for pee
: )

With him I used mostly prefolds and covers (mostly green earth covers) in the beginning. He wasn't super big or super small (8lbs 4oz) but I disliked the amount of bulk we were dealing w/ early on, so this time i bought more fitteds (have a handful from last time too).

I have a few bijou baby gear and a few muttaquins in newborn and small sizes. I stilll have some brand new green earth newborn covers from last time (DS was too big for them at 3 weeks) and plenty of smalls left over too. I have a handful of other covers.

I switched mostly to pockets when he was close to 5-6 months. He's still wearing mediums that I think I bought when he was 6 or 8 months old? He's worn a few of his petite toddler sized dipes for well over a year too (the FBs are definitely showing their wear, but we didn't have a huge rotation of dipes and we definitely got our money's worth).

I may try to find a wool cover or two, and a pair of longies yet. Maybe.

I LOVE prefolds! We have a ton from our first two kids and tons of covers, too. If we need anything new I think I'll wait. I was just given some Indian prefolds to round out our little baby diapers... I think prefolds work the best... but then I haven't used a lot of others--it just seems like you can make them fit any lind of baby shape where as AIO or contours you have to spend a lot and so a lot of experimenting to find the right thing. Plus, AIO seem to take a long time to dry?

Our prefolds have held up so well--and we sort of think we might have at least another ... if it is in the cards!

how do you do this? It seems like the dye would come off on the baby's bottom... I guess I can explore the diapering section of mdc more.. but how do you do it?

I use dharma dyes. I'm going to vat dye this time (I tie dyed last time and it was a PITA) and just do one color per diaper. I have so many prefolds to dye (serious, I probably have 5 dozen in various sizes) but if I vat dye it won't take that much dye. You have to use the soda ash, urea, and the dye fixatives to make the colors take. If I didn't already have most of the dyes it would be expensive, but I just need to order some soda ash, fixative, and something else...probably more colors too.

I'm planning on prefolds, and had been thinking about dying them--is that safe to do while pregnant?--but I'm getting pressure from my mom and a friend's mom who are already assuming I'll just be using a diaper service. And I can't really think of a good excuse not to... It's already been suggested to request diaper service rather than traditional gifts for the eventual baby shower.

Anyone have thoughts on a personal stash of prefolds vs gift of a diaper service?

LOL! I actually used some Gerber birdseye flat dipes that my aunt cut down and serged for DS when he was first born, because he was so small that the infant prefolds and dipes I had picked up for him were way too big. I loved them, and I've recommended them to moms with small babies ever since. I think it is a shame that people just totally write off the Gerber dipes - especially if they find the initial cost of the popular CDs prohibative. Like you said, they are the cheapest option out there and they do work.

We CD part time (DS is in daycare and his provider will not do cloth, so we couldn't CD fulltime). I may pick up some new newborn dipes for fun, but right now my newborn stash is made up of the Gerber flats mentioned above, UBCPFs, Kissaluv 0's, and Prowrap and Bummi covers. I plan to knit a few wool longies and soakers before the baby gets here - we'll see if I actually do it.
Also, I need to reclaim my Kissaluv's from DS, who has used them to diaper his teddy bears.

WhoMe,

I use a service and I am really happy with it. It is cheap and so easy. The dipes show up on my porch like clockwork. the pail doesn't get stinky in the interval between pickups, I don't fill a landfill, and I support a local business that supports families. The diapers are no frills (prefolds) but they work well for my family. I do a lot of laundry as it is for my family, it is nice not to have the extra loads to do. (Though my diapering friends tell me they love the diaper laundry).

I use a mix of covers. Some provided by my service and some that I have purchased or were given to me.

When I need a different size diaper or cover, or a different number, or more sooner, all I have to do is pick up a phone.

I do cloth wipes as well that aren't provided by the service and I got those from various mama friends. Those are really easy to take care of.

I did do a trial of CDing on my own without a service and it got to be much for me. I went back to the service. At the time it was the straw that was breaking my back, though now I think it would be different.

I say it is a great way to try CDing. If you like it and it works for you, great. If you really dig it and want more, then you can invest in your own stuff.

It isn't as fun as doing your own CD's. I have major lust when I see my girlfriends' beautifully diapered baby's butts, but it works really well for me and I remind myself of that when I am tempted to shell out the cash for some stuff of my own

I hope that was helpful Mama.

Edited: I Wish I could have been given months of diaper service at my shower with my first. What a fabulous gift!
