I went for an u/s last week and the umbilical cord was in the way. However, everyone has their theories on the sex because of the heartbeat. We were not able to pick up on the heartbeat until week 13. Fron then until week 20 the hb was always 150. It was at 140 last monday during week 20. Today it was at 130. A lot of people say that it indicates a boy since it is getting so low, even my OB doctor agrees, but how accurate is this? Is this just an old wives tale that should be disregarded?

I think it's an old wives' tale. My MW told me today that she had a baby/client that the hb went down to 110 and she was SURE it was a boy. It was a girl!! My DS1 was supposedly a girl, according to a friend who looked at his hb chart. I don't remember my DS2's readings. This baby is 130-140, I think. MW says it sounds like a boy, but I just can't believe it at all!

when i looked it up i found some article that said that it is totally unreliable as a way of predicting but that in labor boys and girls tend to have differing heart rates. the rest of the time they can be anyplace and it means nothing.

It has been pretty accurate for us. High heart rate for both pregnancies and First was a girl and this one has been said to be a girl as well.

Early this pregnancy, heartbeat was at 140. Everyone, family and friends, said that we must be pregnant with a boy because it was so low.
Average heart rates are between 120 and 160, so in my world that means 140 is smack dab in the middle. I don't know why but that bugs the heck out of me.

Even though after 20 weeks it has been right for me, I do not think that it is a very reliable was to predict sex.

My babies have always been high. I have 2 boys and this one is said to be a girl. So I guess it's wrong with us.
At the beginning my midwife said, oh it must be a girl. It was always around 170 and is now around 160, but this same thing happened with both my boys. so I told her that's not a predictor for me

I'd suggest throwing it out. The baby is how the baby is

Old wives tale. I asked the u/s tech about it and she said it's definitely not true. She does it for a living so she would know. The first thing she does when she starts the u/s is check the bladder (and sex if you want to know) and then the size and heartbeat.
