I want to make my own laundry detergent. Has anyone else done this? I'm thinking I could use baking soda, a little lemon juice, and lavender (or some other pretty smelling essential oil - I like them to smell good
). So, are these the right things to be using? Is there something else I should add? What amount should I use?

Ok, one more question.
Is there any natural way to get the liquid fabric softener effect?

TIA

THanks for your reply!
I guess I'm looking for even more from scratch...to where I don't even need to buy a bar of soap to make it. Are there any recipes totally from scratch that anyone knows of? Hmmm...maybe I'll experiment and then come add my own new recipe to the list.:LOL

Does the vinegar have a softening effect? That's for hair conditioning too right? That sounds good. I'm going to try. Also, do you think the washing soda (same as baking right?
: ) will bleach the clothing too much over time?

Thanks again for your replies.

Here are the laundry recipes that I use:

Basic Laundry Detergent
1 cup soap flakes
1/2 cup washing soda
1/2 cup borax

Liquid Laundry Detergent
1 cup of the above mix
2 Tbs. glycerin
2 cups warm water

For the detergent recipes, mix all ingredients and store in a lidded container. To use, measure 1/2 cup to 3/4 cup of the mix and add to the laundry. Launder as usual. Each of these recipes yields approx. 12 oz. Note: You can buy glycerin at many health food and drug stores.

Homemade Pretreating Stain Remover
1/2 cup white vinegar
1/4 cup baking soda
2 Tbs. liquid soap
2 qt. water

Mix all ingredients in a spray bottle. Spray the liquid onto the stain and let it sit for a few minutes. Launder as usual.
