My next-door neighbor just rang my bell. It seems she saw something glowing in her backyard, and it looked like a burning log near the fence. She threw some water on it, but since it looked to her like the log was on my side of the fence, she rang the bell and together we went to look at it. When we got to my backyard, there was a smokey smell (like from a BBQ or fireplace) and evidence that the wooden fence had just been burning (blackened area around a new hole in the fence, near the bottom.

Nobody was in either backyard at the time the fire started, and there isn't any electrical wiring in the area, nor was there any kind of electrical storm going on today.

WTF is going on? How could this fire have possibly started?

Were people running around with toilet paper torches and gasoline?

No gasoline anywhere except in the vehicles' gas tanks (and at the gas station 2 blocks away.) No toilet paper anywhere but the bathrooms (ok, and at the supermarket next door to the gas station.) Nobody was even outside when this happened!

All jokes aside, does anybody have ANY idea how this fire could have started? It's kind of freaking me out and I'm wondering if something else could spontaneously combust in my house or yard.

I'm in the spontanious combustion camp.

Actually- if there were any cars that drove by and they had gas vapors coming wafting through the air it could have caused a flare...

I know that came out kinda wrong but I mean it in the gasoline sense- not the bodily gas.

Could someone have thrown a cigarette butt over the fence? Kids playing with matches that somehow got thrown over the fence?

Hmm. Nobody was in either of our yards, but there are houses on the other side that face another street. This was pretty close to the back corner, where I guess somebody from either of the other two houses could have thrown something lit over the fence (maybe a teenager who didn't want to get caught smoking?)

Dig around where fire was and see if you can find anything.

I would ask back neighbors about it.

My former co-worker's garage was burned down from rags that were used to apply linseed oil.

My first thought was someone small-ish was experimenting with matches.

Last July 4th we almost set our friend's fence on fire. Someone had a stand-on-the-ground-and-flare firecracker and thought they had a toss-out-and-it-spins-a-bit one. So it ended up igniting while face down and launching itself into the fence with the 12" long flame on the fence, until we ran over with a bucket of water. It took a few moments to realize that's what had happened.

Sorry, long story. With the return of warmer weather that's a possibility.

I was thinking some one on the small side playing with fire, but we do have a pyro living next door to us and a scorched fence between our yard and the apartments on the other side of the block. Is there any long grass near that area of the fence someone could hide in to play with lighters or matches?

Your fence is obviously getting itself psyched for Lag b'Omer.

(But seriously, there are kids around here taking apart the wooden slats of fences and collecting them ... perfectly good wooden fences, mind you ... along with anything else wooden that's not bolted down ... the bonfire prep around here is really getting out of control ...)
