I don't use our dishwasher for washing dishes. I actually want to use it to store some of my dishes. The previous tenants left it a little dirty and I don't want to put anything in there to clean it. It looks like it would be a pain to clean all the nooks and crannies by hand. Can I run a wash cycle to clean it? What would I use? I don't really want to have to buy a whole thing of dishwasher detergent to clean it once. Can I make something or use vinegar. Sorry if this sounds dumb...I've never used a dishwasher before.

I've heard of using Tang drink mix, of all things... gonna go google.

ETA: I'm not crazy!

Dishwashers - Remove the spindles and drawers, clean under them and under the gaskets to get rid of odors. Fill one dispenser with Tang instant drink mix and the other with automatic dish soap and run the dishwasher empty through just the wash cycle. This combination cleans and deodorizes the inside. I'm not sure how the Tang works, it just does.

I wouldn't worry about using any kind of soap. You could just run it empty. It should clean itself fine with just the hot water it uses. If you want to add something, toss some white vinegar in the bottom and run it that way. Vinegar is a good natural cleaner and would work to remove any old build-up the machine might have.

Thanks everyone. I think I'll try the vinegar. Tang?
Do they still sell that? I'll have to remember that if the vinegar doesn't work.
