to run my drier? I'm sure there's an easy way, but I don't know it. I remember calling once, and was told 50 cents a load, which for my use, is not a lot overall, but only if that's accurate.
You could get a rough estimate by checking out how much the manual says it uses (electricity-wise) and then computing with kilowatt hours and the charge from your bill.
Or you could turn it on, check the meter and watch the meter for when it will go off. Granted you'll also include the fridge and other things in there, but you'd get a rough idea.
What?!!! I had this same question the other day and found something on the web that said line drying would save you $75 a year. Now I'm feeling more motivated to find out how much it might be with our dryer...
When I calculated how much propane we were using every month to run our dryer (only thing that uses propane) I figured $35 dollars a month. It also uses some electricity, but I don't have the figure. We were probably drying about 30 loads a month (cloth diapers
). Now we hang our laundry alot although in the summer it is hard on humid days because the laundry can take two or more days to dry completely! We don't get too much sun. So on humid days we use the dryer. So far we have decreased the propane cost about $20, but the price of the propane went up a bit. I can't wait to get my ds out of diapers! I will miss that diaper waddle, though.
I did a calculation when I was doing the math on how much it costs to do cloth diapers. I looked at the kw/hour charge on my bill and the energy useage for my dryer. It came out to about 50 cents per load.
I loved line-drying stuff but it's really bad for me because of my allergies. Just want I need-- to dive into a bedsheet covered with pollen.
There is a gadget thing, don't ask me what it's called because I can't think of it, but we checked it out from the library. It will measure how much electricity certain things in your home use.
We did it once, but I will be going back to get it again to re-check things.
