Hello,

Sorry I had to ask this as I know it's been asked before; I did a search on ammonia but just couldn't seem to find what I was looking for.

What is the best way to get rid of the ammonia smell? BOY, last night, I opened her diaper and I swear I could've opened a bottle of ammonia and took a wiff.

What's the best detergent to use to get rid of it? How exactly do I "strip" a diaper?

Thanks so much!!

What kind of diapers are you using (what kind of materials and what style)? Do they only stink in the morning, or do all of them stink? And lastly, what kind of water do you have (hard or soft) and what is your current routine and what solutions have you already tried?

Oh, sorry.....I use unbleached chinese prefolds. I only noticed it in one diaper so far and that was last night, right before I changed her to put her to bed.

I believe that our water is hard. What I usually do when I wash her diapers, is, I soak them in cold water, then do a double wash in hot water and then rinse them. I put a small amount of detergent in with the first wash, and that's the only time I put detergent in.

I use Purex (I think).

As far as solutions, I don't know of any. My mom thought that maybe I should try a stronger detergent.

Try routinely adding 1/4 cup calgon water softener to you 1st wash cycle (along with 1/4 cup detergent assuming you have top loader, less with front loader).

My experience is that morning toddler pee just stinks sometimes, I dunno for sure, but I think it has to do with how much they drink and what they eat.

First, keep in mind that ammonia smell could be due to a bladder infection. Look out for other signs and symptoms.
I think I would do what Simone said in your case. With hard water, you may actually be using too little detergent to get your diapers well cleaned.
Pam, do you use a Nighty Newt with your other child as well or only on your 2.5 year old? My experience with the Nighty Newts and other thick hemp prefolds is that they harbor bacteria deep inside after a while, so we have problems with them getting strong with ammonia, too. Since it is just a prefold (no synthetics/snaps/elastic) I would boil it for a good 10 min. at a high boil and see if that cures it. It is only a temporary fix, though, and in my experience, the mornings gradually become stronger and stronger with ammonia again.

Hi Holly,
DS wears Nighty Newts on a reg. basis at night. 3 month old DD wears either hemp fireflies or fb stuff w/ a nighty newt soaker. No ammonia smell w/dd's stuff at all.

I'm going to give them a boil. I'm guessing I should use a pot that I don't cook in????

Thanks again,
