For me I would just dig it out with a needle and some tweezers but he is not going to sit still for that. It is a very thin splinter in one of the creases on the palm of his hand. He keeps bringing it to me and telling me it hurts. Should I soak it and see if it will come out that way?

Yeah. Soak it in some soapy warm water. The soap might help it slip out.

I had to use a needle to get some splinters out of dd's hand when she fell on a deck made with treated wood. (Yuck!) But for a regular splinter I think soaking it will do the trick.

try some lotion, then try to push it towards the opening with your fingernail. Then tweezers. You have to be quick, it's the best way, I have found.
