From Barbara G. Walker's "Knitting from the Top":

"To wind yarn into a ball that pulls from the middle, just hole the end of the yarn on your palm, exposed, while you wind the ball over your fingers. Wind the yarn loosely, and don't lose that yarn-end. It will pull out of the ball quite pleasantly, giving you a ball that is stable and won't bob around, as it does when the yarm is pulled from the outside of it."

Hope that helps.

Pictures are best. Perhaps you should try googling it.

I'll do my best...

I secure the end of the yarn loose;y around my wrist with a square knot to keep the tail out of my way.

I hold my thumb and forefinger parallel, like a sock puppet mouth. I then figure eight the yarn over them until I reach the end of my thumb.

with my other hand I gently pull the loops off and press them together in one direction (mimicking the sock puppet mouth shape actually)

picnhing (i'm nak'ing and chicken pecking with my left hand... ) the folded figure eght between your thumb and forefinger, wrap your yarn around it and your fingers.

slide your fingers out re-position, and repeat.

as your ball gets larger, use more fingers.

does that help?

I used to use a toilet paper tube. 'd cut a slit in the top aht I could slip the yarn end into, then wind aroound hte tube. Once it was all wound, I'd slip the ball off the tube, being sure to hold the end that was in the slit in my fingers. the bonus to this method is that when you pull theball off the tube, there's some slack where the yarn sort of collapses into the center (where the tube had been) so the yarn isn't stretched at all, which can happen when you're wnding by hand.

Amey ~ M&M's? Ewww. But I do have a tube of Smarties (the Canadian version of m&m's, much yummier imo) that got lost way back in the pantry. Sadly the Smarties are stale, but the tube would still be functional.

That is why you wrap the ball around your fingers instead of itself, it allows for room.

Or, if you happen to drink carcinogenic toxic drinks (like, say, Diet Coke) and have a small bottle left around, you can use the bottle as a nostepinne. Put the end of the yarn in the bottle, screw the lid on then start winding around the bottle in a figure of 8. Use the curve of the bottle to help keep the shape. When you're finished, unscrew the lid and gently slide your ball of wool off.

I'm so glad someone posted this! I just reorganized my yarn and I have one type that didn't come with a centre-pull and it's a pain in the butt. Now I'm going to try rewinding it. Yay!
