I think I'm ready to start saving bacon grease, but I'm wondering...what do you store it in? I would preferably like to find a little crock or something and not an old tin can.
Also, do you store yours out on the counter or in the fridge? Any other tips would be appreciated!
I just put mine in a ramekin in the fridge. I keep it in the butter compartment on the door - although I recommend letting it cool before doing that, or else you end up with fat all over the place!

Wow. Please educate me ladies. Isn't the best place for bacon grease, uh... in the garbage? lol I'm getting the idea that bacon grease is now seen as health food instead of health enemy... obviously I must be behind the times... I hadn't heard it. Or do you simply want to "waste not; want not" and not discard any food if you don't have to. What do you do with bacon grease and how much do you actually save or use? Everytime I get bacon, which isn't often but its the turkey bacon we like, there isn't a drop of grease to be had once its all cooked up lol and thats only every few months, we're not really a bacon family. But supposing we HAD bacon grease, what do you do with it, and why? Any info or good links? Also just curious, do you make your own bacon or just buy from the store?
I buy the no nitrate and occassionally the organic kinds .
bacon grease is a great tasting grease for a roast in an iron skillet with some potatoes.
I keep mine in the fridge.

A good traditional diet reqires high levels of saturated fats, from pre conception on.
It sessential for brain development and maintainence.
Every cell in our bodies is made up of 50% saturated fat, and that must be maintianed.
Animal fats remain soft and smooth in the body, and do not clog anything up, unlike new fangled vege oils.
I personally waiver between 55% and 75% of my calories coming from saturated fats, and I have never been so healthy.

Thanks... I thought it might have more to do with health. When I was raised, all you heard was how butter and eggs were so bad for you! Margarine was the healthy fat! Seriously! I was interested enough to have gotten some books at the health food store which said otherwise... it talked about how hydrogenated oils were not only not good for you - they were detrimental! Imagine that! And here we are 20 years later, and I think last year didn't they pass a law in New York that outlawed trans fats or something? I couldn't believe it - talk about how times change. I went many years with eating very few eggs and then every time I did I thought "cholesterol." Same with coconut, for many years all you heard was how it was the "bad" fat, and in recent years I've come to learn otherwise. It's not only not bad, its' beneficial - blows your mind. I've never given bacon much thought because I've never heard the other side of that one, but I have to admit I was under the impression it too was a no-no. Nitrates and saturated fats. I'm rarely a pork eater so never really gave it much thought until now. Very interesting
I keep mine in an old wide-mouthed PB jar on the counter until it's full. Then I'll put it through a rendering to clean it up, repack it into clean jars, seal them and pop them into the pantry. The pastured nitrate free bacon we get renders a LOT of fat, so I wind up with plenty of it. I've actually slowed down my CO usage in an attempt to use more of the bacon fat I have on hand.

Wow, I used mine so fast I could never fill a whole jar. It makes everything taste wonderful!
